Why fix what isn't broke? I don't see the need for a separate slam section. I'd never visit it. The majority of people here are very appropriate and knowledgable and if someone gets out of hand it's handled appropriately by a moderator. Who wants to moderate a slam section? Sounds like a mental asylum to me.

exactly, and you wouldn't have to go in there. Thats why stuff like that would go there. it seems we have a thread locked / deleted every week, for no reason other than to keep those that don't like the conflict happy. meanwhile, some of us mental patients were enjoying those threads.

I think it's just better to shut the thread down for further posting, but leave it where it lies. that way, a thread isn't singled out as being a bad agrument, which is what moving it to a separate section would do. I don't think there's a need to draw further attention to a thread gone bad. the parties involved all know who they are, but it would be good to leave it there for all to read into the future so people can go back and read it for entertainment, which is really what they are. like somebody said, everybody stares at a car crash

I'd rather see people argue than practice "group think"

Groupthink is a type of thought exhibited by group members who try to minimize conflict and reach consensus without critically testing, analyzing, and evaluating ideas. During Groupthink, members of the group avoid promoting viewpoints outside the comfort zone of consensus thinking. A variety of motives for this may exist such as a desire to avoid being seen as foolish, or a desire to avoid embarrassing or angering other members of the group. Groupthink may cause groups to make hasty, irrational decisions, where individual doubts are set aside, for fear of upsetting the group’s balance. The term is frequently used pejoratively, with hindsight.

In my opinion the internet and this forum especially are not the places to call someone out or express your personal conflicts with other people. If you've got a problem thats what telephones and E-Mail are for. Say it to their face or dont say it at all, because we dont care.

A lot of interesting points made and I will add my 2 cents...if you want it or not!
I dont want to speak for John but he has never made it a secret that he wants a "family friendly" site. To be completely honest with you I cant beleive he has been able to hold those reigns for as long as he has!!! To have kept that integrity intact with the amount of members that could post anything at anytime is pretty impressive.

While I completely agree that people should be held accountable for what they type I think there is definately a time when some threads/posts need purging...but NOT necessarily for the benefit of the person posting but for the benefit of keeping the INTEGRITY of the SITE intact. We all know how things snowball.

Maybe instead of complaining that a thread was deleted we should all take a look at the bigger picture.......

Simplify.......

I believe things have actually gotten better here. Like Jenn said, John has always stated that he wanted this to be a family friendly site so then some of the crap has to be deleted to have it that way.
The people who regularly read and post here most likey have already formed thier opinons of who they like or dislike. No need to move the trash from one barrel to another.
Lock if it is getting out of hand to avoid the pigpile and delete it if goes overboard.
As is.

People need to be respectful of others plain and simple
a little "group think" might not be such a bad thing...it's just a fishing forum after all.

I don't think group think is necessary at the expense of original ideas. Go out on a limb with your ideas. The problem we are having is not in restricting someone's ability to voice an idea or people voicing their ideas. Usually the stuff that gets squashed is because of the pigpile and nastiness just getting stupid. I do think pi$$ing contests for sport can be pretty stupid.

I don't know who said this "If we are not man enough to accept different views of others, then we really are not man enough.
We all have different ideas about things, but to put someone down for their view is not rational. Just present your view and agree to disagree and move on.
