good to see your post, and I agree 100%. You were the first person I thought of when i read the initial post and thought it might be you

Dan Haggerty Reports: Keeping Kids safe on the Internet
The search for a missing fisherman in South Kingstown comes to an end. We now know the man who was somehow swept out to sea has died.
The 59 year old victim was in the water for about 45 minutes before rescue crews were able to find him. He was about 30 yards off shore.
The call came into South Kingstown Police around 6:30 last night- Fisherman in distress off Deep Hole in Matunick.
The search was intense, after 45 minutes, a man identified as Paul Martin of Longmeadow, Massachusetts was pulled into shore. He was rushed to South County Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Police tell us Martin was wearing waders in the water while fishing, and somehow got swept out.
Jack Linton is a fisherman who says he didn't know the victim, but he knows how scary the water can be. He's been in a similar situation, when the tide takes you out, you feel helpless!
Linton: "What happens is once the waders fill up your feet go up, then you get into trouble."
We're told another fisherman in the area made the call to 911- but Martin, the victim was fishing alone.

Regardless of circumstances, it is sad and my condolences to his loved ones.
Hey Jim, when I heard on the news last night without a name, I also had some anxious moments wondering if it was someone I know. Good to see Eddy post too, he was one I was worried about...

I just read another report and it said he "fell off a breakwater" ?
I wonder if he was climbing along the wall in the back or perhaps over by East Matunuck beach near the rockpile?

Very sad. My sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.
Years ago, a small crew of us used to fly fish the mouth of the Merrimack in Newburyport. The bottom is very fluid sand. Orvis used to make these manually inflatable PFD that had pockets for 4 large fly boxes. It was as standard gear as my waders. I have to admit, we put ourselves in some pretty dangerous circumstances. Eventually we stopped wearing the PFDs. That was our mistake. I am by no means even suggesting that this man made any mistakes. Just sharing my own experience.
Next time I don the waders, I shall revisit my korker studs and my PFD - especially on the breachways. A few surge waves into those rocks, even with others right there, could be VERY dangerous.
Rest In Peace Paul Martin.

Too sad. out for a good time and never comes home.
Every spot has something that could potentially get you. i think at deep hole its these roll around boulders that make it very hard to get firm footing. bumped by a wave , you have a hard time finding a spot to get you feet down firmly. Alos , if it was way out where the waves break at that extreme east bar at Deep Hole , you must be about 200 yards out sometimes. That's a long way back in if something does go wrong.

A couple of SK firemen told me this morning that the guy who called 911 said he had to get back out and do some fishing.

I could see that in a situation like this, some might choose to "salute" someone like that by getting back into the suds, others might choose to call it a night...
We should move specific discussion on safety at DH and the bars to another thread...

Same here Jim. Deep Hole and Carpenters were my go to spots when I was a member of the Club on the same road. Always fished both spots alone in the middle of the night. You need to be aware of where the drop off is and you must where Korkers.
Thoughts and prayers from my family.....

Matunuck and Carpenters are pretty safe spots, if it starts to get deep, that means you are off the bar.
Unlike Hazard or Beavertail - spots that conspire to killl fishermen - at Matunuck, you have to get very unlucky or be stricken.

Any spot you fish should always be thought of as dangerous...no matter how "safe" you might think it is......anything can happen at any time! Accidents can and do happen even in the safest of circumstances!

It's a damn shame. My wifes friend did CPR on him last night when they foiund him. I already got the 'you be careful speach' this morning...
Saltheart, If thats the case, and he fell off the wall by the trailer park, it's a different story. Unless he had a heart attack or panic attack, and hyperventilated him self out, I am having a hard time figuring this one out. Like Jim and others have said, I have never felt unsafe there, EVEN in seriously big swells, even before I wore a wetsuit. You might get tossed, but properly suited up you should be able to eventually get your feet under you!
My other thought; if it was on the bar, and the other guy went for help, did he do so b/c he was unable to help him? I know PIemma and I have walked by guys at that spot and others to check on them. We even went to check on a guy who put his boat up on that bar one night, AND checked up on a pink fender ball that we thought was a fat guy floundering in the surf in Narragansett... Make sure we keep on an eye on eachother out there!
