So I went into Price Chopper on Rt. 9 in Shrewsbury this morning. Outside was the normal Salvation Army bell ringer. I do my shopping, about 20 minutes worth. As I'm coming out the store exit, I start walking down the alcove to towards the parking lot exit. I notice the bell the Salvation Army guy was ringing was on the ground, near the door. I look out and he's on the ground having a seizure. 2, not 1 but 2, people walked right by him, looked and walked in like nothing was wrong. I get over to the guy and start evaluating (I'm an EMT as well as police officer). He's starting to come around and FINALLY someone asks, "Should we call someone?" No...let's just sit here and see how long it takes him to die! I then call the local PD on my cell and get an ambulance started.

Finally, the manager comes out. "Is there something wrong?" No...I like talking to people only when they're lying on the ground having seizures...you want to talk?

I cannot believe that 2 people just walked by like nothing was going on. People just don't give a damn anymore!

I've had the good fortune to be in line at 2 different stores whereand when the person in front of me blacked/passed out while standing directly in front of me. I'm not an EMT, just a regular joe that happened to take acompany sponsored CPR class.
I caught both persons before they could fall and suffer any serious head trauma (falling on a marble floor can REALLY hurt). It's amazing that your mind clicks into "CPR" mode at times like these.
Judging from the "deer in the headlights" looks from those standing around, it made me glad that I took the class.

The best part was once the profesional medical personnel arrived, I gave whatever info I could an quietly walked away and continued on my merry way.
The only time I didn't jump into action was when I was involved in an accident.

I am embarrassed by society's lake of compassion.
Funny how the same people that would walk right by will also be the ones further down the road complaining that they can't get help.

The "good samaritan" law would keep you out of trouble.

I resently watched a police video on tv where a Boston transit cop [MBTA cop] was fighting on the sidewalk with someone. I don't know how the video came to be, but it showed MANY people look and keep right on walking!! I wonder what they would do if someones dauther was being rapped? Unfortunatly, I think I know the answer. People are perfectly willing to let the police or anybody else help them, but when the tables are turned, the conveniently look the other way. I sure hope Spence is right. KARMA

Ya,can you imagine the need of a law to stop you from being sued in helping someone.

Kudos to our Police and EMTs.

Two weeks ago my Grandson stopped breathing, my Daughter in Law, a Trauma Nurse ,couldn't revive him, as she had on 2 other occasions.

The Police were there within a minute and did revive him, even stopped back the next day to see how he was doing.
I know he wouldn't have made it without them being there.
These guys are highly trained and are always there when you need them.

They have my highest respect and regard for their profession.

See it every day at the hospital. People are afraid they may have to take time out of there busy schedule or are afraid to have their name on a report.

Quite a few years back I was working at the Mt. Hope Marina restaurant and a waitress came running into the kitchen in a panic. Some guy was choking on a piece of meat and nobody was helping him. I ran out to the dining room and the guy was literally blue. I dislodged the meat from his throat and went back to work. While I didn't expect any reward I REALLY didn't expect the owner to threaten to fire me if I went out in the dining room again in kitchen whites. It makes you wonder about people.

I was giving a guy CPR once many years ago on the side of the road where his car went into the bushes because of the heart attack he was having cause him to end up there. Someone standing behind me kicks me in the butt and says , "leave him alone can't you see he is dead". Well the victim of the heart attack lived another year only to die on a golf course in Florida. The guy who kicked me got shoved into a big bush he was standing in front of after somebody shoved him.

CPR works on animals as well as the Heimlick manuever. Did the Heimlick on a sheppard about thirty years ago.

It really is sad that people could go on about "their business" while someone is in need of dire help like that. How they can do it is beyond me. I've helped a few people in situations over the years and wouldn't hesitate to do so again. To me it is just something you do. I would have trouble sleeping at night knowing I did nothing to help, and it cost someone his (or her) life.

I guess it just comes down to how a lot of society is today. "Screw everybody. It's all about me". Well to people like that I hope when their day comes someone is around who thinks otherwise and is willing to help them. I am a believer in KARMA and what goes around comes around.

Your right MAC! Its a "ME" society! When the chips are down or someone is in need.....your instinct is either to help and do what you can do or just run and ignore the situation! It is a moment that defines ones character! Folks that choose to run......they must live with it! I pity those folks...I really do!

i've helped a couple of people at accident scenes- like mac said, i could'nt sleep if i did'nt help. it's a basic trait in most of us to help someone in need. i think more of us have this trait than not. i always think that if one of my loved ones were in a similar situation i'd want someone to help them out.....do unto others....

People are afraid to get involved.

One time down the cape , i think Hyannis , I saw a drunk fall in the road while crossing with a crowd at a cross walk. Everyone was walking around him staying far away. I went up and picked him up and walked him to the sidewalk where there were sone chairs. Asked him if he would be OK , etc. As I turned to go get him some food and a drink at a take out counter , (not alchohol) I notices all the people backing off away from me. They were afraid of the fallen drunk cause he was weird and afraid of me cause I must also have been a weirdo for helping this guy!

I have stopped at a few accidents to help. Performed CPR on 4 people and luckily I have been able to help 3 of them regain their breathing. One didn't make it. Wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from his car. Like others have posted, once the paramedics arrive, I just told them how long I'd been doing it and any other information I witnessed and move on.
