I'ld think grinding foots would be time consuming. Having a guide foot that has been grinded will allow for your thread to go on evenly. A good exampel is to look at a 50 ring guide. You notice the foot on a 50 is a little thicker and requires more grinding to get that nice even taper. Smaller guides have less grinding but ya gotta go a little slower so ya don't grind your nuckels off(like me) lol
