i would think most of those thames clips were shot in "the basin" that is right in the middle of the harbor. the best fishing is definitely by boat but there are large fish taken by shore bound anglers every year out of that river.
most of the fish you're seeing are not small keepers, more like say
15" -24" but there were pictures and reports of a 50# taken in dec.
there are many many fish that winter over there and right now there is a decent night time bite but middle of may to middle of june some truly large fish make their way up river and that is when fishing the thames is at it's best.
i know this has been said before but it's worth repeating- if you're going be prepared you're going to have lots of company and more importantly make sure you have a ct fishing license, the ct d.e.p. likes to hang around and check for that sort of thing.
oh, and lock your vehicle things have a way of disappearing around norwich.
