I did my scout exactly this way. For the blue signal coat - you want to use a hard paint - not ablative. That way if you do wear through the black ablative the blue hard paint will function and not wear off until you can recoat it. This system has worked perfectly for me for 4 seasons. I just touch up the black each year wherever it's showing through to blue. Re the type of paint - there's a compatibility chart (usually on the shelf where you buy the paint) that'll show you with which hard paint the ablative is compatible.

I used to carolina coat mine.
micron csc on the sides where the sun hits it.. and vc offshore on the planing surface.
the vc offshore is a sailboat race paint. super smooth..less drag suposedly? the growth only grows where the sun hits anyways..
