Toilet Troubles

Thanks Buddha it's with the clean water side of things.

So here's the dilemma: The back screw (of 3) holding the water tank to the base was dripping, at least a 1/2 cup of water per day. Water poured out when I leaned against the tank to shut the water off. Rob Rockcrawler replaced my gaskets and reattached the tank. The tank wasn't cracked or chipped and the area the gaskets contact was clear of funk and chunks. So why the heck is it still leaking? My house is going to rot out from under me before the year is out.

Check where the 2 bolts go through the tank and base of the toilet, common problem. Just put a little plumbers putty around the bolts inside the tank to seal the leak or replace them with nylon bolts and rubber washers.

is condensation and the screw can be the lowest spot
so thats why it leaks...there sometimes
and to fix that you run warm water to your tank.

otherwise for temporary fixing it....

if you want...

you can drill a 1/4 inch hole right thru the floor
into the basement and put a 5 gallon pail down there.

if this is a first floor toilet that is...

and then hook up a funnel and some plastic tubing
like what you'd use for an aquarium and just drain it
away... just heat the tubing with fire to stretch it as needed

thats the back woods hillbilly method tho heh heh heh

I have been fooled a few times by leaky toilets. I find the best thing is to get under the tank with some paper towels. Wipe the drips and keep following it back until you find the source. i once went all through changing the big donut gasket between the tank and bottom part of the toilet only to find out is was the clean water supply leaking and running down along the bottom of the tank and only dripping where i thought the leak was.

Hey, sorry about that. My notifications had been going to a different email address than the one I use. That and I was at sea. So...

I went to the hardware store and asked for putty, and they wouldn't give it to me, saying it wouldn't work. I got some extra gaskets and used one on the outside, as well as the one on the inside, and it's working so far. I also try to NEVER touch the tank. Now if I can just get those cheap floor tiles to stick back down where they got wet... Zap a gap!

I managed to crack my tank a few years back while rebuilding it.Was an vintage 1950's toilet .I found some heavy duty marine epoxy and filled the crack with it.I let it dry then covered the front and back of it with another layer.It's held up for a few years now.Toilet troubles are never any fun.Hope you get yours fixed.Could be the gaskets are just flattened and the screws need to be snugged down a little more.
