plug cleaning, please help..

i know i've seen solutions before.. but ran a search and nothing came up. they are buried in threads some where..

i need to remove the rust stains/smell and tobaccy smells from our plugs.. one solution i have heard is flavorless toothpaste.. but i've been searching all spring and have yet to find any. i think toms of maine makes it.. but i cant find any instock.

soooo.. question is.. what else can i use? would a mild scentless soap work? or is that to chemically? damn the fish and their overly sensitive fishy noses..

i think the mild soap and some warm water would work. that is what i always use. in the middle of the season, i sometimes will mix some salt-x with warm water in a bucket and rinse them that way and then re-rinse in just warm water... have never had any problems and fish still take them after this. if all else fails, clean them as you please and then rinse with bunker oil

i'll give it a shot.. can't hurt. only problem is i'm so bad at catching fish i wont't be able to tell if it worked or not.
but i'll have something new to blame all the skunkings on.

rusty hardware isnt the issue.. it's mostly the tobacco scent that needs to go. (and some rust stains, which i would assume leave a chemical trail of some sorts) it's not like they are dirty... fishing gets rid of dirt.. but i really need to get the tobacco off.. trust me, most of them must have a nice film from smoke on them from sitting in my room exposed to the deadly air all winter.. not happy about some of the new ones being exposed to it. what i thought was a sealed container, had a hole in it.. uggg.
of course i could just do myself a favor and quit.. but then i wouldnt have anything to be fumbling around with when the only strikes of the night occur..
