nope I never have dropped the lower unit myself. I can shift it into gear and rotate the flywheel, I can then disengage it and get it back into gear. The more I look at it the more I suspect the cable is not moving as easily as it should.

Looks like I am going to need to replace the shifter cable, have to pull the old one first.
Wish I could put the boat inside the A/C!!!!

I hear that on the a/c, cable is an easy fix, and if you're gonna do one do both, the only thing that's a little tough is adjusting, make sure the throttle cable pulls on the linkage a little and the shift needs to be dead center, to chekc it in forward kick the prop the direction it should go in reverse and it should grab, do the opposite in reverse to check it, might take a little fine tuning

I wasn't planning on boing both, though given the relative small cost of the cable, it may just be good maintainance, the cable is 9 years old.
I am interested in how 'easy' the shifter should move, it has been somewhat difficult to get the engine into gear, it seemed more difficult to get into reverse than forward, I am going to disconnect from the clutch shaft and try it that way.
I think I need to replace the grease fitting on the shaft also, some my mechanic of choice for last years service may not have lubed the shifter shaft as I cannot get lube in thru that fitting.
Thanks for the guidance,
Bill
