ROGUE WAVE REVISED 0300, 7.28.08

Rogue Wave

I haven't posted much lately, late start due to engine rebuild. Electrolysis ate a few holes in my 4-year-old block. Yamaha covered the entire $10,000 rebuild. It was over 1 year out of warranty and everything that requires lube was replaced. Have I mentioned that I LOVE YAMAHA! I wish I could be a spokesman for Parker/Yamaha; I would sell so many boats. I know of at least 5 local striper guys that have purchased a new or used Parker after fishing on my war platform. Every penny I earned would be donated to a charitable org., I incorporated early this year WhalingCityFamily.com and WhalingCityFamily.org. I started several new businesses in the last year and each one has a nonprofit element incorporated into the mission statement and corporate charter. I learned what true altruism is from the fine people in AA. They saved my drunk a$$ life now its time for me to help someone else.

Back to the story:
I Steamed from Swansea Marina at 1800 hours Friday night July 26, 2008. Stopped to snag pogies on the way. Fished a few spots on my way to Beavertail, nada. 2100 hours fished house on the rock, bluefish, a dogfish and 1 very large seabass on a live eel (which was the second time this month). 2330 hours, stopped by may parents boat in Jamestown to say hi. 2430 fished Dutch, 1 large blue nothing else. 0130 dropped the hook and slept in the cockpit under the stars in a hammock I bought this winter, what a beautiful night. 0330 woke up and went to search for bunker. 0430 started fishing rocks outside Narragansett. 20 fish all over 20#’s. 2 fish in box a 30 and maybe a 40, Boga read 42 but has been off before. 0630 moved to last rock pile off the camp. I was swimming pogies and casting a #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& Big Head popper into white water. Picked up a few schoolies, a monster blue and a high teen bass. Whitewater was at the end of my cast, 200ft or so. Boat was in gear, bow pointed out to sea to maintain my position in the rip. Water around boat was very manageable, loose sets of rollers, nothing breaking. Seas were large and breaking 200ft south of rock pile. After about an hour or so of fishing this spot at approximately 0740 I heard a roar and looked toward the bow and a monster wave crashed on the bow breaching the boat. 2nd wave flipped the boat, 3rd wave of the set flipped the boat 360 degrees from turtled position to upright back to turtle. My West Marine Ocean Series Hydrostatic Inflatable Life Vest activated as advertised when I hit the water and my ACR ResQFix 406 GPS Personal Locator Beacon EPIRB activated as well. Finally I purchased safety gear that lived up to its marketing BS and saved my life. I took my personal inventory and knew I was ok. My next thought was to secure the boat. I reached under the bow and released the anchor locker to keep my baby off the rocks. The anchor rode wrapped around my PFD and my groin area. The undertow pulled me under the boat and I popped up in an air pocket, smashing my nose on the deck. I ripped the PFD off my chest and grabbed my dive knife from the calf holster on my right leg. I have been carrying a knife on my right calf since 5th grade. It was either a dive knife or a rigging knife w/ marlinspike. The undertow pulled me about 10’underwater to the transom of the boat, thankfully the engine was gone. The piston snapped and the bracket busted. Amazingly my Parker transom was not damaged, built like a brick sh1thouse. I managed to hold onto my knife by the Grace of God and cut myself free from the anchor rode. I swam to the bow and managed to pull myself up on the gunwales and hugged the flared bow of my Parker23 hull. At this point, my boat was in the snotty area of the rock pile and the breakers were outrageous. I was unable to stay on the boat, I tried to swim away from the boat but it kept following me, riding up my backside and smashing my squash. Miraculously, I was not in too bad of shape. A few cuts, bloody nose and bruises were the only injuries I could feel at the time. At this point I was probably 300 yards from the camp beach and convinced I was going to die. My prayers were answered, some how I made it into chest deep water and body surfed to safety. The last 100 yards were the most brutally painful experience of my life. I used my Van Staal Titanium pliers that I carry on my waist as a digging tool and to push off the rocks. I hit every rock and made contact with every barnacle and mussel bed on the bottom. No wonder this place is Striper Heaven the structure is unbelievable. I pulled myself onto a flat rock and started puking saltwater, my throat and my other end are raw from the flow of seawater through my body. I cleaned out my trunks and thought it was seaweed, however, I sh1t myself in all of the excitement. 10 minutes later my leg starts vibrating and I hear music. I thought I was going mad, and then I realized it was my freaking cell phone in my pocket. This phone is a Verizon GzOne rated as water resistant, this phone kicks a$$. I smashed my 1st one in January while working in the yard. It was a fishing Buddy that was off the rocks at the mouth of the Sackonnet River. He asked if I was into fish and I relayed a quick version of the events. I called SafeSea, made the report and started calling friends and family. The Coast Guard and SafeSea were on the scene within 5 minutes, however, they were unable to reach me. I was still in the wash and needed to get on dry land. I wish I had my SIMMS corkers, I can’t count the times I fell on the slime. While on dry land I watched my T-top float away with my radar dome as well as all of my floatable gear.
I am so thankful to God that I am alive; everything that was lost will be replaced by insurance. 3 hours after capsizing I was home in bed ordering my new boat from Don’s Marine in Tiverton RI. There was absolutely no doubt in my mind that I would own a new Parker. Yup, you guessed it… It’s a Parker 25SE, 2 feet longer with a 9’6” beam and twin 150 Yamaha 4 strokes. Did I mention that I love Parkers and Yamaha engines?

My boat has slammed down on hundreds of rocks while fishing the sh1t over the last 3.5 seasons. I fish from March to January, 736 hours in 3.5 seasons and I don’t troll. Many times a large wave has picked me up and deposited the boat high and dry on many a boulder fields. Boat listing at 30 degrees when the next set pulls me off the rocks. Every year I spend at least a g-note on bottom repairs, last year I had to have 6” of the skeg welded back on the engine that was lost in the rip at House on the rock in Newport.

I will list the items lost when my fingers aren’t so sore. SafeSea picked up my AquaSkins surfbag and all of its contents as well as 2 - 5 gallon buckets and a chumbag. The National Guard stopped by my former spouse’s house and dropped off more gear including another chumbag full of dead eels, 20#’s of clam bellies and pogie mush.

I went to SafeSea to talk to the gang Saturday via the North Kingstown Police. The SafeSea guys are incredible. They were so gracious and accommodating when I walked into the office looking like an oversized wet and bloody rat. They even fed me pizza slices and many glasses of ice water and gave me a SafeSea hat. Sunday am I went to SafeSea to find out what was up w/ my boat. Then I went to Brewers for a shower. I removed nylon shards from the anchor rode with vice grips from my private parts in the head at Brewers. The folks at Brewers must have thought someone was being murdered in the bathroom. I have been to many yacht yards/marinas all over the world and Brewers is one of the finest. Brewers Wickford Cove tops the list of all Brewers locations. I have befriended the gang that works there and would not think of changing marinas.

The boat is still on the rocks as of 2000 hours this Sunday evening. The Salvage Team from SafeSea will attempt salvage Monday at 0400 low tide or Tuesday 0500. I am renting a boat from Wickford Boat Rentals to watch them pull my poor little Parker from the beach. I saw some pictures of the hull and it looks fine. These boats are kicka$$. Did I mention that I love Parkers?

If anyone fishing the area finds some gear, I will reward you. There is a $2500.00 reward for a gold and stainless Rolex Submariner that is sitting on the bottom in my Parker console. This watch has more sentimental value than monetary.

I am so thankful that I was alone, I am certified as a lifeguard and swam 1-3 miles a day for 5 years before I got FAT 8 years ago. Most of my fishing is done alone. If I had to worry about a friend, things would have been much worse

Please call me if you find anything 401-742-4191.
Bruce

1 @ 32 Pledge. Our beloved Striped Bass are in trouble AGAIN.

I fished through the lean years and don't want to live through another collapse of the stock.

2 fish @ 28" is ridiculous.

Parker-

Sorry to hear about your ordeal.

Based on your post, I am not sure where you were. Were you between whale rock and the narrows? I ask this because I fish this area near the breaks and was in that area Sunday AM.

Cool

How big did you say your boat was? 30, 40 feet? To carry that much stuff on your boat is crazy.

If I was your insurance company I would be highly suspect, even not being your insurnace company I am highly suspect.

No disrespect but reading your account it seems reckless on your part to be in the place you were in the conditions recounted by yourself.

How many other incidents have you been involved in of this nature?

Who in thier right mind would carry all that stuff unless they were on a 6 month expidition into the unknown reaches of the Amazon or some such.

Either you or your parents are filthy rich with vast amounts of expendable surplus cash or simply the insurance list is slightly exagerated shall we say?

that quantity of equipment is beyond the realm of believability.

Why even try.........

...why would you admit your history of reckless boating behavior in a public forum while attempting to make a large insurance claim?

I'm glad you're OK, but we fish that entire stretch from a boat all the time, and would never get that tight in to create such a risk. Good thing you were fishing alone - that's just reckless and unnecessary.

Good luck with your claim -

I have no reason to doubt anything you've listed, and I don't, really.

. . . but if I was an insurance agent I would. That's quite a list. To be honest, when I first read it I thought you were joking.

Anyway - I gotta leave for RI now to do some SCUBA diving.

WOW!

I thought the 3 bottles of cologne was a little strange. Unless you're planning on picking up a mermaid, why would you need to smell nice when you're fishing?

Seriously, glad you're o.k. Parker. It sounds like being as prepared as you were is what saved your life. I'm going to be a lot more careful and better prepared from now on.

When I fish, I bring four bottles of cologne - one in each pocket one in my waders, and one strapped to the opposite leg of the dive knife. That way in case I run into any hotties, I can be assured of masking the eel stink - except for the ones who like that smell (you know who you are)

Gee, this is getting a little silly. Though it does sound like a list of stuff that used to be in my truck - though a lot fewer and a lost less expensive stuff

Here I was feeling a little uncomfortable about leaving my GPS and tackle box on my boat. I wonder what kind of alarm system he has/had on the boat.

Its not the first time and it won't be the last I'm sure, but I honestly don't know quite what to make of this thread right now.

I think the tread is about to boil over and out of respect for the accident we should just let it all go as we've done for the most part up until this point. Just my opinion.
