whale rock was actually an old lighthouse- infact, I forget which hurricane it was, but the lighthouse keeper rowed his boat in for supplies and left his wife and children out there right before the storm struck- He had no idea it was coming.. The next morning all that was left was what you see now- just the base of the lighthouse.. poor guy.

The base station was in the cove to the left- you can still see the granite boat ramp and pillars..

that story and the story about the father who watched all 3 of his children get washed off of the road in the school bus @ mackeral cove is so tragic
