well i did it ...... booked a fishing trip to alaska. next july and aug. starting on the kenia, we will fish for a wk at a camp called the fun moose. 2days of king salmon 1 day or 2 halibit fishing and 1 day fly into trip . next wk we fish and stay where we want, for 3 or 4 days moving back to seward . where we pick up the wifes and spend a few days inland..finely we take a cruise ship south to site see and party for 7 more days to vc..... people i still can;t beleave it. we have 5 couples so far. the hole trip takes 3 1/2 wks i need any info u have on the kenai or if you have been there also on the denali . its a long yr away ...wow dave...

i spent 18 days in alaska this summer. a week on kenai, 4 days in cordova and a week in south east. (i worked my way through college down in bristol bay in the early 90's) your going to love it. feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions because i'd just go on & on if i started to type about it. seward, homer, sitka, and "the bay" are my favorites

I have a friend who is in Alaska now. Had three trips scheduled, halibut, king salmon, and flyfishing for grayling.

I spent a month there about 14 years ago, 12 days on a float trip hunting then another 12 in prince William sound hunting the islands and fishing. Unbelievable, can't begin to describe Alaska, when I came back I tried to get the wife to pack and move there... needless to say I am still here!! You won't be sorry. Enjoy!

Got back from my honeymoon recently, northbound from VC to Seward, went fishing, went hiking....... awesome. Alaska made me feel absolutely tiny. You are always looking up. Wildlife is amazing, although the brown bear and cub I accidentally got 30 ft from scared the snot out of me. You will love the trip, I can't wait to go back.

ive waited 30+ yrs to go there .i need advice on the whole trip. what to do on the kenai, how to dress in aug, what kind of gear , for fishing .. bear repelant etc. its a trip of a life time... i promiss lot of pics . and i got to thank my wife, she pushed me to do it

Too bad Capt. Don is not around anymore. He loved Alaska, lived and worked there for a bit and visited often. I'll bet a rainy afternoon with him at the shop would have been a great resource. One of the regulars in the RI forum on the other site (BB the JJ) just posted about his trip. Perhaps you can check out his thread and contact him.

Now that there is the trip of a lifetime. My wife and I spent 16 days there in 2005. I have a great shot of my wife salmon fishing in a stream with brown bears fishing in the background.

Don't know much about fishing the Kenai. Seward is s good place to deep-water fish for halibut or salmon out of.

You mentioned Denali. We spent a few days there. You should do an all-day bus tour, one that takes you all the way to the end of the park road and back (it's about a 13 hour trip with frequent stops and a lunch at a lodge in the park). Beutiful scenery and wildlife. Also, we did a one day tour with a company called ERA Air. It's called a "heli-hike", we took a short helicopter ride deep into the park and hiked for several hours, the most beautiful country you can believe.

The best part of the trip, for me, was the bear viewing. I'm not sure where the salmon are feeding at that time, but you should look into a fly-in bear viewing trip. Seeing huge brown bears fishing is unbelievable.

Grew up in Fairbanks until I was 18, try to get back to visit the family when I can (which is harder and harder these day)
It's funny, when I was a teen all I wanted was to get out. Never really appreciated all it had until I was away for a few years.
My Grandfather had a boat out of Valdez and I have many good memories on it fishing for halibut and salmon.
July/Aug is a good time to go, weathers usually nice and the days are wicked long, however if you think the weather changes fast in New England wait'll you see AK so I'd advise good foul weather gear. The mosquitoes are no joke, they will swarm you like no tomorrow and they eat Cutter for breakfast so netting would be a good idea. Never had any crazy bear moments (some close calls with bull moose though) but most people recommend the spray.
