Ahhh, Putin's nephew. Because Russia didn;t have ANYTHING to do with this. All Georgia's fault. Not even scratching the surface on this one

It's all about $$$ and the oil in Georgia, period. Look at which two countries were making noise last week, trying to keep the price well above $100/barrel; Venezuela and Russia. The Russians are always about cash, cash, cash. The Middle Eastern producers, even including Iran, are OK with the recent drop. They don't want to kill the goose that laid the golden egg....

You got a point there... ooo, you brought Venezuela up! Too bad we failed to assassinate Hugo Chavez. Yes it's all about oil and gas. Russia is a huge supplier of Gas to Europe! The Ukraine supplies most of Europe's grains.

Russia doesn't want cash, it wants influence. Go back 20 years and switch Petrorubles for Red Army Divisions and it looks like the same play. Unfortunately the last 2 administrations missed opportunities to bring Russia in as a partner, instead they threw money at it and told them to keep their ball off the playing field.

Good point John! Russia doesn't want western influence in the regions it had control over in the past. It's almost in a sense whereas the US wouldn't want Russia to intervene in Mexico [which is far-fetch]. Georgia and Ukraine enrollment poses a threat to Russia's military dominance. I believe it's more power than monetary.
Although a sanction on Russia would cause a collapse in the EU as most of Europe is dependent of Russia's Gas. Update: Sarkozy gives Russia 1 month to move troops out of the break-away provinces. I doubt it's going to happen. They're going to be hanging around for some time and will give similar excuse to why the US is in Iraq. It's a chess game!

In the new world of high priced energy, Russia figures that if they have the natural resources, ie Georgia's oil reserves, they have the keys to the kingdom. By controlling a major reserve, they have the influence, which for the past year has reaped those in control of them beaucoups bucks.... Oil, or the lack thereof, has become the biggest bargaining chip to leverage. While diamonds are not traded on major futures and commodity exchange as is oil, the Russians have in the past, wreaked havoc in the diamond market by leveraging their other major natural resource; Siberia's diamond mines.
