Just saw the bit about the pellet stoves. I heat with a jotul wood stove and love it . Neighbor had a pellet stove a few years back and when the prices started to go up with the huge demand he switched to coal. Isnt a ton of pellets about equal tot he output from a cord of wood. I do really like the idea of not having to feed the stove religiously. Living alone and working 12 hours a day its tough coming home from work. My stoves rated efficieny is supposed to be around 80%, there is never any color to the smoke coming out of the chimmney.

Efficiency? Yea for sure. Don't know the % but it incinerates the pellets in a mini blast furnace. Nothing but fine ash and clinkers left (clinkers are superhot ash that melts together into a lump) A bag of wood pellets is equivalent to a gallon of oil. But the heat is MUCH nicer for the price. If your looking now I wouldnt even bother, the winter pellet prices are over $350 a ton right now. Time to buy is late spring-early summer it's down at $250 a ton. Rob I think your right on the cord=ton
Much less hassle. Fill it before you go to bed, it's 64-68 in the house all nite and next morning you fill it again. We're using about 1/2 bag overnight right now. No smoke, no smell, no black ceilings.
Best thing I ever did. I'm looking for a used one now for the basement. Now that the boiler isn't running non-stop it get DAMN cold in my office. I'm looking for a small unit on the cheap.
Con is if it runs out in the middle of the night or day you gonna be COLD. But so is a wood stove too.
What happened to all the snow today. Sky sure looked it but never saw any. Furnace sure didn't stop much in the shop today.

Another drawback of the pellets is the stoves need electricity, better get the battery backup.

i was just wondering how a pallet of pellets measures up to a cord of wood...
for Btu's / value or maybe its two pallets to one cord
of course you need the automated pellet stove
But, i've been burning them occasionally and find there's
plenty of hot coals in the morning left over...
as they seem to burn slower than hardwood overnight.

Not to hijack the thread, but Salty...what clearance do you need around the stove? I.e. how far does it need to be from the wall and how far do you need to keep things away from it? I'm DESPERATELY trying to find a space to put one in my house
