"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.

He can speak and he's charismatic. Sounds like fluff and it is, but there is a corelation between the occurance of a positive economy when people have faith in the president. A 54% percent approval rating is a lot better than a 23% rating.

I can't believe some of the responses on the slo-jo website:
'www.projo.com' 'your turn'
The 1017 response is to me, the logical type of response that I hope most people feel if they voted for McCain. They offer a position they hope BO takes, points out an obvious, w/o being negative... Sounds like an RIJ response...
The others.
I only hope it is one right-wing-nut posting all of these...
November 5, 2008 10:17 a.m.
The best man - John McCain - sadly lost. Obama's election is a historical event, but Obama must govern from the center to have any hope of success, or Republicans will overtake the House and Senate in 2010, and the Presidency overwhelmingly in 2012.
November 5, 2008 10:14 a.m.
This is a REAL sad day for Americans. We are looking at a guy who believes in partial birth abortion, giving illegals drivers licenses, giving money to those who DO NOT pay any taxes, cavorting and associating with KNOWN terrorists who HATE this country, wants to change the Constitution so that conservatives cannot have radio talk shows,...etc. It is clear we are living in the last days where God has sent those who do not believe in him a strong delusion so that they CANNOT believe. You had better WAKE UP!!!!!
November 5, 2008 10:13 a.m.
Lord, forgive them for they know not what they've done. Clearly, Americans are scared for their future. Scared plus ignorant equals disaster.
November 5, 2008 10:12 a.m.
Obama is not our first Black President, he is our first bi-racial president. He is not African-American either he was born in Hawaii (or so he says). I was a die-hard Democrat until this election, and I don't change my opinions easy. Let's just hope the next four years go by quickly and without too much change (I like my paper money)
November 5, 2008 10:05 a.m.
November 5- I so agree... The Antichrist has arrived. The salvation of all souls is imperative!

I disagree with you there Joe, this economy has nothing to do with Bush or any decisions he has made. There are major core issues with the foundation that was built upon the last 4 years of so. Its convenient to point fingers and believe we can get out of this with confidence, buts thats a pipe dream. Many more layoffs are coming, Holiday sales will be abysmal and the market will get crushed. We have another 15-20% to drop in the housing market. Imagine what that will do to the current problem. There is very little Obama can do to help this economy, his needs to be not to do anything that will make it worse.

Eisenhower, Kennedy, Reagan, Clinton - charismatic
Nixon, Carter, Ford, Bush 41, Bush 43 - not charismatic.
Its not nearly that simple, but consumer spending does drive our economy and consumer spending is dependent to a large degree on faith.

You're right, 72% of our econmy is consumer spending. I guess my point is that people are not going to spend because there is the very real possibility they may lose there jobs, the president has little impact on that.
I know my family has already had the discussion that we wont give gifts for adults this year, kids only.

Start a right-wing message board with a bunch of anti-Obama tees, stickers, coffee cups, hats. Your economy will improve.

I'm glad it is over with.
Not happy with Barney being re-elected by a landslide, obviously people in this state are uninformed
I have faith the country will get thru this economic crisis, if not, we're screwed.

Not bad, but that image would not print well and lacks resonance with people under 40.
One would need to come up with a cultural touchstone that is nearly universal, one that trancends all ages, incomes, and shades of white people.

Did you really? Place wasnt bad, not too mention the sub $2 beers and $3 shots.
The city shut it down right before the starbucks-abercrombie and only-banks-can-afford-the-lease takeover of central square. That was a sad day. The handful of bar fights didnt help either, but it was a place close to the old neighborhoods heart. It was one of last great bars on Mass Ave this side of the Charles but I guess good things dont last forever. When woolworths left central, I knew the big money seige was on...

I liked the place. I shot darts (and worked) at Father's Too outside of Kenmore and we would frequently play against the A-Team at CPS. I thoroughly enjoyed beating their Ace more often than not because he was a cocky basstird, kissing his trophies and such trying to intimidate us .
Missed the Buck-A-Shot we used to come with on a monthly basis off the cheap end of the speedrack. Also miss the 1$ Busch bottles when things got tight just before a paycheck...
Yep - good (dive) bars
I wouldn't be surprised if most of those good old haunts are gone, The Tam, Father's Fifth, Beacon Hill Pub, Back Bay Pub, etc...

Apparently 202,254 others thought he deserved another chance, I didn't and was informed.
You wanna keep a man in office that is not helping to fix what he himself had a lot to do with screwing up the fannie mae crap, go ahead, make your day(can he share his wealth with me, I could use it). Time to get out those responsible for F'ing up the economy. Who has he answered to? That whole bailout thing is a joke and those who profited can rot in hell. The other candidate would have done a fine job with access and fishermen issues, unfortunately he didn't get the chance,
this time.

Mac, that is funny

At least someone ran against Frank.
Down here, Delahunt ran unopposed. 70% of the offices on my ballot only had one candidate.

I"m not too surprised by the responses on this board. After all, Obama didn't do too well with white men.
Of course it isn't going to happen overnight, but I really do have faith Obama can at least lay the groundwork for getting us out of this mess. Like him or hate him, the people have spoken and he will be our President.

My fear is that San Francisco morals will soon be shoved down our throats with the likes of Obama, Pelosi, and Reid now in complete unchecked control.
