A little while ago I was at a meeting at Sea Ray boats down on Merrit Island just south of the launch pad. The entire company broke 10 min before launch and went outside to watch...it was pretty cool.
Depending on the launch trajectory, it is possible to see the shuttle from RI as it's going up during a night launch. I was able to do this a year or two ago. Looks like a satelite that's cutting in a wierd direction.
My father was fortunate to see many launches from Red Sector A before he retired.
