if you enjoy shooting, joining an indoor shooting range this time of the year would be fun. if it wasnt for me being in school in nevernever land upstate NY, i would in the range a couple times a week. with ammo prices these days though, its almost getting as expensive as buying copious amounts of plugs

Plug Building
Eels will go on the "endangered list"(I have a bill in Congress now)You will be forced to fish plugs, that will lead to building your own plugs, and you will wonder why winter is so short!!

Been shootin at least once a week, but that's gettin borin .....plus EXPENSIVE.......22lr doesn't keep me interested enough, so gotta shoot the bigger stuff.........
funds are low (don't WANT to work), so gotta be cheap........and they closed the candlepin bowling alley down here.....can't handle the big balls.......maybe I'll break down and ice fish..........
To top it all off, I have read the past months worth of posts in ALL forums on Both sites............weedin through the usual banter of which rod/reel and VS versus every other reel and happy b-days is startin to become mundane.......appreciate the ideas though.....keep em comin....

start writting yer memoirs,,,,,,,,,,,,,
especially to include last year's VERY
pheeshnominal season!!! even if it never gets published,
it takes time, you could share yer experiences with yer
grandkids much easier that way, and it doesn't cost you SQUAT!!
you DO have some pen and paper,,,,,,,,,,RIGHT?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the only other thing that comes to mind
that is FREE and takes up time,,,,,,,,,,,,,IS
volunteer work!!! there is always some way to
contibute to either your local community, regionally, or
to a national agency somewheres. check the yeller pages,
the closest church, Senior Citizens Center, Big Brother,
YMCA (teach sum kids to surfcast), Boy Scouts of America,
or the nearest library and become a story reader for kids?????
while i realize that ALL of the above might cut into yer imbibement,
the rewards far faaaaar outweigh the sacrifice of a few too many brewskis
AND you might actually enjoy/learn something about yerself in the process
,,,,,,,,,,,,,good luck with your "pursuit of happymike"
Bored????
There is ice fishing.
Try taking up plug making ( I know it ain't like eels but catching on your own stuff is kind of fun and rewarding)
Or..... back in 98' I went 22 months stright here on 'ol Cape Cod catching bass ( not big ones mind you in the winter months) it was lonely most times and very cold in January, February and March but Stifftip will tell you I took him one day In February to a local Cape Cod Bay harbor situated at the Mid Cape area and though it was 26 degrees, spitting snow and blowing 20 from the N/west he took a 26 inch fish on his first cast. The shellfish warden was there when we arrived at the landing to suit up to go out and he asked us for our shellfish licenses as he thought we were going clamming when he saw the fishing rods he said "do you two know what time of year this is"?
If you know where to go you can catch from Truro to sandwich year round ( btw the way the biggest winter bass I took in those 22 months was 33 inches long in a local creek) we took fish in the dark in January in one southside creek as well as soon as it would get light they shut off and it was in the 20's temperature wise and you had to slide down ice covered embankments.
I gove up the crusade at 22 months because my waders had a rim of ice around my waist and my guides were completely frozen, sh!t like that happens when striper fishing in 19 degree temps. I had had enough but proved it is possible!
There is no reason to be bored.
I know, winter sucks if your a striper fisherman, but when the winter is harsh the fishing the following season is usually good. I don't know why but it just is! Also, there are some good movies out there. Slum dog Millionare, Frost/Nixon, Clint's new one is a must see, and more. And, I don't know where you live, but Providense winter over striper fishing is WELL worth your effort. Fish after dark around Hemingways restaurant which is easy to find and there is plenty of parking. Use 1/4 oz to 1/2 oz jig heads with 4"white or greyish blue zoom flukes, sluggos, finess fish or the like. It's really pretty good fishing right through the winter. Bigger fish seem to be more plentiful this year. I had a 12 pounder last month and several of my friends had fish up to 40 inches so far. Also, there is plenty of elbow room. Alot of guys don't like the cold. Also, Ice fishing is very, very good. This is the first time in alot of years that we(RI) have had fishable ice. Get some shiners and go catch a big pike or large mouth. Check with local tackle shops for best bit. Most of the ponds here in RI are producing. Wordens has been good for pike. DEM stocked trout and some big salmon in a few lakes too.
I hear ya on this. Were having a great winter so far too. Great snow, and it seems every 2 weeks were having a nice powder day.
Redlite grab yourself a snowboard and hit the mountain. Your winters will become just as fast as your spring/summer/fall. Get outside and enjoy some SNOW!
So let me get this straight.....
You have to much time to your self and no kids to suck up your disposable income...WAHHHH!!!!
Seriously, take up ice fishing. It gets you outside, you get to fish, you get to drink, you get to eat, You get to sleep nights, gear is cheap ( a good jigging rod is $35 and a good tip-up is $15), The company is good.....you can even bring the wife if you want
it's a natural answer to winter for a fisherman
Excellent idea Mike!
I've got a nature video I've been watching on the habits of the long-legged bed-thrasher....gonna get another about the red-breasted warbler that's also supposed to be good....
Actually, I'm starting a project that's gonna keep me outta mischief for a while using stuff from my collection on bass clubs - the time is right to get it underway.
Another one is with my uncle who's gonna be 97 this summer and has a collection of jazz and early blues 78's that goes back to the '30's that numbers in the 1,000's - told him about USB turntables and he's into it, so we're gonna digitize it and put some of it on CD's - another thing to keep the shack nasties at bay -
Also just got some bucktails from Jules - they're excellent - gonna cast and tie some bucktails, then there's cleaning and repairing my schtuff...walking the dogs at low tides around my spots to see what I see...reading old fish books to revisit them...
Basically, old guy stuff to keep me from jonesing...
Or maybe I'll just go watch that nature video again in a while...it's really fascinatin'...
I bored also.Straight porn only takes up a few minutes of my day.Several times a day.So what do I do for the other 23 hours and 45 mins..Tried starting some flame wars..It's like they are made out of kindling..
I burned them all to a crisp.No competition there either.
Perhaps I could call Flap a plug tossing,giant Neanderthal,Big foot sissy and get a few pages out of that, but it has all been done before.I will get out black fishing Friday But they have been getting tough and it's about to wind down.
I don't have any hair to pull out.If I eat anymore I will have nothing to wear..
I will be the Naked Notorious NIB..
Redlite, go with the Playstation thing. I dusted mine off after a two years of storage and fired her up just after Xmas. You can get used games at GameStop for like $1-$5 each.
Also, I have been hitting the gym hardcore. That passes the time on the cold evenings where normally you would be preparing to head out to fish. I have put on 10lbs this winter already.
Been finding %$%$%$%$ to put on Fleabay as well. It doesn't take much effort and you can make a few $$.
If nothing else, sleep while you can.
