Just stopped by his shop, he's still there. He just got back from Vietnam so he hasn't shovelled out, so it does look a little deserted. He explained that he took down the tackle sign in the fall because no one buys tackle from November-March, and he's diversifying into the jewelry/Asian goods to make ends meet, so that explains the jewelry sign. He did a little addition off to the side with goods from Vietnam, Thailand, etc.
Got to talking with him (really just listening) and he explained how the tackle biz was tough and he was trying to generate another income stream. He pointed out that Ron at Sportsman's Den sells tackle, sharpens skates, carries darts and related dart supplies, and finally was just able to get a permit to sell firearms (I know he fought long and hard for that one - the recently replaced Quincy Police chief was anti-gun and wouldn't allow it to go through). He went on to point out how not too long ago there were 30+ tackle stores in the area and now there are but a few.
He also pointed out that he's been there for 30 years and he's not going anywhere - so you can all sleep easier.
