From what I hear from a relative who is high up in the military. They are revamping the loran system as a back up for GPS.

Offshore it is still very useful to transmit general areas (i.e. the 500 square etc..)

I still use it all the time. I hope that Obama changes his mind and continues the funding. As it is right now his budget will shut it down in 2010. Bas news to have the whole country dependent on one navigation system.

I can't understand why Loran has continued as long as it has - waste of money IMO. Shut down one or two stations and the system is blind for the region covered. Clouds? Fog? and they system tells you that you're somewhere else.

GPS OTOH uses 24 sats, of which your receiver needs to see only 2 to 3. Relatively speaking, problems are rare. I've still got lots of TDs that I need to convert to GPS, and I know time is short. That alone is not a good reason IMO to spend millions of tax dollars on inferior technology.

Best regards,
Roger

Still using Loran: I have a flush mounted Northstar 800X into the consule. If I take it out, I'll have a big ugly hole there. I use it all the time. It has waypoints in it routing me safely around the Vineyard, either via Muskeget Channel to the east or around Gay Head to the west to the offshore grounds and structures. Still valuable.

How would clouds affect a land based radio signal?
