This has been going on for years. We have had people in the town I work hire an officer to sit the house for the day just so it doesn't happen to them. Also one has to figure since most thieves don't read the newspaper its probably a relative who knew no one was going to be home.

Exactly. Lots of people also ask trusted friends to house-sit for them while they're at the funeral or wake.
