massachusetts fishing tournament

I am creating a tournament program this year for all types of anglers. I am having a couple of tournaments every month for fish like stripers, blues, largemouth/smallmouth bass and trout. It is $10 to enter in a tournament, and the winner takes 75% of the entry fees, the other 25% is what I get out of it for organizing it and sitting at the weigh in all day, and keeping records of the fish. For more information visit my site: www.geocities.com/hinghamfish/website.html
the first tournaments are being held in April for Trout, check out the site and read the information, you can also post fishing reports and check fishing reports.

four people have signed up for the next two trout tournaments, so right now the pot is at $30. There are also some more people that havn't signed up yet, but will have by the next 2 days.

hate to see mobs of people now taking up fishing for a chance to win money. not to put down your idea abu and i'm sure you work hard to put it togather, but every two weeks. i know there are other contest during the season but not with that frequency. i do like the idea of the contest but i think it may attract people to the green, and not the fish. i was not into fishing when the striped bass seemed to disappear from our waters years ago, i know only the good fishing now and i like it. more money driven contest more people more trash no room no parking NO FISHING.

DRUMCORPFAN, i understand what you are saying, i thought the same thing about "a tournament every 2 weeks". The reason why I am making these tournaments have a cash prize and are so recent is because now a days people don't have much time to fish, and if they sign up for something they will have the motivation to go out, and they can bring their kids and family with them to. Now about the prize, the tournaments aren't about the money, it is a bonus that comes with the fishing.

just having to bring a dead fish in to weigh. i'd rather have a witness with a pic. that would allow you to fish too.

I personely don't see anything wrong with those type tourneys. Large mouth tourney are held weekly in southern mass all the time. Some are well organized and respected.

As far as 75% payback, thats a turn off. I could see if you just enjoy being involved and small % is going to charties or a good cause.

As far as integrety, poop can realy get out of hand when your talkin salt water. I fished a tog tourney that got ugly when a couple of guys with lobster trap co. on their shirts showed up with a 11#, 14# and 15# togs. They took 1st 2nd and 3rd (all $'s).

I think with such a small pot your better off keeping the same regulars you fish with and keep it freindly

If you think these tournaments are going to get out of hand like the one you were in, you are wrong. First of all there is only one winner for each tournament. And second of all, the 25% that i get out of it is only because I am the one organizing it for everyone, sitting at one spot the day weighing fish all day.

Is there a limit on the number of entries you'll accept?

Do you send 1099's to the winners at the end of the year?

No there is no limit, and Teamrock on i cant answer your question because i dont know what you mean by 1099's. And i have one more thing to add, if you think that these tournaments won't run good, and there will be problems, all i have to say to that is you should try it before making assumptions.

You don't know what a 1099 is? and you are taking in money, and paying out money? You ever do this type of thing before? Better do some research if you don't know what a 1099 is.

Alright, now i can answer your question teamrock on, no i dont, i dont plan for these tournaments to turn into a huge ordeal that will have conflicts in them, because that would take away the purpose, to have fun. Its just like when somebody wins money in a raffle at a local sports game, they dont send them a 1099 after.

Most local sports raffles are run by tax-exempt charitable organizations.

Abu - something to consider as some of these fellas are lawyers, CPAs, snake oil salesmen...

All legal issues asside, cheating and accusations are not uncommon in money tournaments. You say people are making assumptions here but understand a lot of people here are not new to the tournament game, whether shore or boat, whether participating or running these tourneys. One reason our Tourney is a free C&R tourney. It stays fun & fosters some competition.

ABU - how old are you? And does Old Salt B&T endorse this tournament...

Thanks,

John

What John said

No one here is questioning your motives---but I've been on this earth half a century and have seen tournaments among friends deteriorate into fights and finger-pointing over cheating. IMO hosting an internet tournament--even if billed as a friendly one---is opening up a can of worms like you never imagined.

You ever win more than $600 at Foxwoods or the track? Remember what you had to do and fill out to collect your winnings? There's tax consequences here that you are ignoring. Maybe the IRS will ignore them too, or maybe they won't. If they don't, you could have some 'splainin' to do.

i think your all missing the point

i thought we were talking about a fishing tournament were did the IRS come in to play and talk of a 1099. you would need a hole lot more people to take in enough money for a 1099. just go fishing and leave the IRS out of it. and as for the cheating and fighting if theres anyone reading this that has cheated or fought over cheating your not welcome to fish with me ever just keep your lines tight and put the fish back when your done taking the picture.

keep a tight line and put the fish back after you photo it
