Yes he had some sort of spinal stroke. He is paralyzed from the chest down. Love him or hate him he was an advocate for the outdoors and helped a lot of youths with his tournament. He is one of the good guys who gave back and supported the cause. Best wishes.

That sucks, hope all goes well for him. Ive watched his shows, and enjoyed them alot. He was filling the void for the lack of profanity in fishing shows these days. You just never know

I hope he sticks with his motto! The hard way, The Barta Way. I enjoyed his enthusiasm for the outdoors. It must be a tremendous blow to his family and his own psyche.

From Sport Fishing magazine
On his way to Alaska to tape his TV show, Tred Barta recently suffered a rare occurrence called a spinal stroke. He is currently paralyzed from just below the chest down. Prognosis is way up in the air at the moment. His message to everyone is… "Don't take a single second of your life for granted." Send him best wishes at tred.barta@bartaiso.com.

He is the most entertaining fishing show host out there, and he knows his stuff offshore. Hopefully he can make it back out there.

Best wishes to him. I personally like his shows. He definately has the enthusiasm. Like someone else mentioned his honesty....its refreshing to see outdoor shows where the host makes mistakes (and they get aired!)

That's terrible.
I've never met the man, but he was a strong advocate for outdoorsmen, which puts me in his debt. Plus anyone who shoots a grizzly bear with a home-made bow and arrow from a few yards has some serious stones. Backup gun or no backup gun.
Get well soon.

i read a great deal about medicine/nutrition and should have gone into medicine at a very early age... that being said........
i have never ever heard or read about someone having a stroke
in their spine.... it must be extremely rare.
i think stem cells could/might help him recover if they were available. i never underestimate the bodies ability to heal itself.
i wrote to him and told him that he has lived more than ten men
if that is any consolation and that he would be in my prayers
each night as i gaze at the stars.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day ...
show him where to fish and ... you'll be sorry

Here is what they say about prognosis of this injury:
Spinal cord ischemia (and its irreversible tissue injury of infarction) is a myelopathy, generally associated with substantial motor, sensory, and bladder and/or bowel dysfunction. The short-term mortality rate is 20-25% over the first month following onset of symptoms. The overall life expectancy is diminished because of the vascular, infectious, and other medical complications. The striking improvement in medical care and rehabilitation has led to an improvement in quality of life for patients with spinal cord strokes since World War II.
Because the extent of damage is less than that sustained in most traumatic cord injuries, and the potential for recovery is greater because ischemia is reversible in part, these patients may have better function than patients with traumatic cord injuries though the prognosis for substantial motor recovery should be guarded
So although he may never be the same, there is possible hope for him.
While I find his approach a little over-the-top, I do admire his honesty.
How many of the "so-called sports greats have ever admitted when they failed, ON TV to boot? I hope he makes as complete a recovery as possible.

An injury of this kind to a man with as much zest and passion for the outdoors is worse than death. I pray for a complete recovery for Tred . Saw him kill a wild Boar with a Bowie knife . The man definatley had some cast iron balls.

I hate to see something like that happen do an active sportsman. It is doubly painful. He has an in-your-face attitude but I thought his shows were very entertaining, even when he was a little annoying.
My great uncle use to harpoon swordfish off of Montauk to Nomans area (back in the day) and was the most active guy in the world, could fix/build anything and was a hoot to be around. I watched him slowly die of Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) and it was horrific, esp for him. I hope Tred recovers and preaches his Carpe Diam style of life once again.
Prayers to him and his family.

He did get a chance to have his son on his show, and it was an episode where he openly admitted that there was something he wasn't experienced with. He made sure his son got in on the action and learned from the experience.
I believe is was the "Striped bass off Long Island after dark" episode.
