You usually deserve it . Seriously, difference between a pi$$ing contest over something/someone and an accusation of someone breaking the law are entirely different things. If the law is involved something official will probably come along in the paper or some other more formal outlet. What I have heard fourth hand is not sufficient for me to think of yapping a story I have no knowledge of.
