As I understand it it best to get the shot because they have no idea when the infections will peak out. It does take some time (a few weeks ) for the vaccine to cause your body to produce the antibodies but It may be that even more people have the swine flu in December than now. As I understand it they have no idea when it will be at peak.

They are also saying that the most severe cases are in people who have it , then appear to get better , then relapse a day or two later. So even after someone feels better you got to watch them for a few days to a week to be sure they don't relapse. From what I know , if you do see a relapse , get the person to the doctor immediately , even if you have to go the ER route to get seen quickly.

Be careful with the secondary infections, it may be something other than flu, I've seen staph, bronchitis and penumonia

thats exactly what happened to my wife. She was a mess Saturday, back on her feet Sunday and went to work Monday. Monday night she could barely walk and Tuesday was worse. She did go to the ER and they gave her a chest xray, everything looked ok. The doc said rest and fluid and ride it out.
My son's reaction was similar but we keot him resting and he recovered. If you or your family have the flu, DO NOT underestimate how big the bounce is! You will be feeling fine and then on your arse the next day. Its a common symptom and can lead to much worse if ignored. Rest for days!
For me, Im still healthy!

When you get better and then a couple days later you relapse , its most likely a secondary infection causing the relapse. Very comonnly its respiratory and could be pneumonia. That's what's been happening to the people who have ended up in hospitals and even have died. its the secondary infections that can kill you , not the initial flu virus itself.

Anyway , I'm going to get the shot as soon as I can.

Exclamation i heard recently

that if you were born before 1955 you have more resistance to the swine flu than those born from 1955 -----> on

but i implore you to take echinacea herb (sold at walmart) as it works MOST excellent
and i've seen it stop symptoms of flu in it's tracks
or at the very least cut them immediately in HALF - if not prevent the flu altogether!!!

One of the nurses in my school system said that she thinks that some parents are giving their kids fever-reducers (tylenol etc/)...in the morning to lower the fever so the kids are allowed in school. They possibly do not have or cannot afford the xtra child-care nor can they afford to stay home themselves with their child. Meanwhile a potentially H1N1 infected child is circulating with the rest of the students. Our schools are forcing kids home with any type of fever.

So the questions in my mind....

How long does the bug survive once it's airborne? ie: someone sneezes touches the doorknob....
I was told, it dies when it dries... but does it reactivate once moistened?

Will this be a problem every year from now on?

Will the strain change from year to year, thus making us all vulnerable once again, even if we caught the first strain?

Where does it go in the summer?

Jimmy, like you.....we were ALL sick in my house, total of 5 weeks, it seemed to keep floating around from person to person. Me nor my wife got tested, but the little guy did....and the results were negative. ???? But our symptoms were definitely FLU - LIKE.
fever/body pain/cough/sore-throat....and now SINUS problems.

Good Luck staying healthy everyone.

sorry to hear 5/0. hope you heal up soon.
Bloocrab - my doc told us that the flu test is only 50% accurate. Its sounds like your son had it but it came back negative, sounds like an issue with the test.
Wife and kids are back to normal, I somehow avoided the whole mess.

Jimmy,

It's funny you should mention the accuracy of the test.

When they gave my wife the results from my son's test, they said "he has a 70% chance of not having it".....I obviously wasn't happy in hearing that and questioned this "70%" thing to my wife as I was not present during her visit. I guess I owe her an apology.

That is disappointing though, one would think they can confirm Yes or No......not maybe.
