I just saw a post on another site about some gear stolen in Charlestown. Gold VS reel, 10' Lami with the owners name on it, and a green plug bag full of customs. It's in the RI forum and the owner's name is Mike. There's a description of the gear and of a vehicle and the driver that was seen in the area and possibly spotted actually making the grab. Anyway, thought I'd give a heads up here.

GEAR STOLEN

1. Custom 10" Lamiglass Rod, with owner's name on it.

Name however is misspelled on the rod
2. Van Staal 978 reel, GOLD
3. Green bag of custom plugs, Some made by the owner.

A witness has come forth and offered a description of the truck.
The officer also witness the truck leave as he was on routine patrol. The officer told me that the truck is close to being one of a kind because of the tires on it and the sticker on the gate.

Truck Description
TAN Ford 150-250
Mid 2000's. 04,05,06
Over sized tires.
Yellow emblem on the tail gate
RI plate. Witness didn't see the plate number.

man- this is like the 3rd or 4th year in a row (this time of year) guys gear is getting lifted out of that parking lot. always sems to be the same time- monday/tuesday afternoon about 400pm- just before dark- the last few years its happened 2 or 3 times over a couple week period. keep an eye out.

Found Gear, Not Stolen, PLEASE READ.

Tuesday Morning at Charlestown Breachway around 9:00 AM

Myself and buddy fished the beach from 5am to 730am. Upon returning from the beach I noticed some rods and blue container, near the jetty. We both looked at the gear, a VS 200 gold reel # 958, Lamiglas Ron Arra 10ft custom rod made by Dons Rods in CT with the name ************* on it, Shimao reel and airwave 9ft rod, green plug bag, 3 plano boxes filled with custom plugs by goo goo man and others, blue bin with clothes, cell phone (which is dead) tried turning it on for contact info.

We waited until 9am and debated what to do. It was decided that I take the gear and post online and use the internet to return it to rightful owner ************** , who’s name was on the rod.

There was old food near the gear and some bottled water, no signs of the owner.

I worked all day and upon returning home I found numerous post online claiming I stole the gear and that the owner was gone for only 10 minutes. I would never steal this gear from a fellow surfcaster. I’ve had my windows busted and gear stolen twice while fishing do to break ins and would not wish that on anyone.

What’s better to have the gear grabbed by an honest fisherman who plans on returning or leaving it there for who knows who to grab it and sell it?

And yes that is my truck that the witness saw, 2005 tan f150, yellow sticker on the tailgate, the truck and myself are very recognizable so even if was going to take it, everyone would know who I am. I have nothing to hide I did what I felt was the right thing and grabbed the gear so it would be safe. I am an honest person and anyone who knows me will tell you that.

ALL THE GEAR IS IN MY POSSESION, NOTHING HAS BEEN TOUCHED OR CHANGED, IT IS AND ALWAYS WAS MY INTENSION OF RETURNING THE GEAR.

Just for the record I know Chris and belong to the same fishing club as him, he would never steal anybodys fishing gear.Chris seen some gear left by itself and didn't want it to be stolen so did the right thing by taking it with him and then posting it up on the net as soon as possible.Hopefully there are no hard feelings for what he thought was the right thing.He still has the stuff untouched, so if anybody has any contact info please let him know asap.I'm sure the owner is dying to get his things back.

Chris top notch I to had my truck broke into last year and lost soe stuff.. Glad to know someone honest grabbed it to return it to the owner.. I think sometimes people jump to quick myself included.. Earlier this year a guy went into the drink down the hill left without his gear due to bein shaken up and was trashed on another site for it.. If you contact Ctown police Im sure they will help you contact owner..

The plans is to contact the charlestown police, the thing that worries me is the fact that no one has heard from the guy.

Chris had posted it earlier on another linked website looking for the rightful owner. Had he not stepped in and helped a stranger, chances are it would have been gone with the next passerby.

Just got off the phone with the Charlestown Police.

The officer knew of the gear and the situation was very relieved that I called it in. They are going to give him my contact information once he is released.

Hope he is alright but who would leave their gear just sitting there and go away for even 10 minutes?

Its a good thing that an honest person picked up the stuff instead of someone that might not have tried to return it.

Like the old saying goes " A good deed never goes unpunished".

The easy thing to do would be to walk away and leave it. But being a good person someone takes it upon themselves to realize something was amiss and to take the time out of their life to try to get the gear back to the owner. From other accounts I have heard the gear was there unattended for over an hour but I digress that that is just what I have heard and I should not make any assumptions based upon hearsay. Unless you were one of the people actually involved everyone should stop jumping to their own conclusions based upon hearsay

chefchris401 should be commended for trying to do the right thing. Too bad the guy's cell phone was dead also as this might have sped things up

Chris is an honest good guy and someone you would want to find your gear. Did the guy take a nap or something? Why was his gear not with him. I didn't talk to Chris yet to get the story but there are always 2 sides. What was the other side of the story about leaving his gear sitting around?

Whereas I'm the one who started this... no-one was jumping on Chris or accusing him of anything. The guys gear disappeared, someone saw a guy in a truck take it, it was reported to the cops, the cops called Gary who works at the B-way and told him about the grabbed gear and asked if he knew the truck or the driver and asked him to check around and spread the word. So he did. Well, thankfully it turned out that it was a good guy who picked the stuff up for a good reason. But, having "lost" a Lami and a 706Z out of my truck there at dusk several years ago, I , like most normal folks, guessed it had been stolen. What a shocker!!

Anyway. Thankfully it has been returned.

This is like an episode of Law and Order. Only more entertaining. You start out thinking the guy is bad, turns out he's good, and some good citizen and police work solve the case. Congrats all around.

What I want to know is who leaves stuff like that laying around? I've done this sport for over 40 years and never left my stuff ANYWHERE that I wasn't. I lock rods on the top of the truck even at Quaker Lane when I go in for eels.

New take on an old saying: "A fool and his gear are easily parted."

Same guy that went in at Nappatree earlier this year and did same thing. This is the second time this year he has ended up at a hospital while fishing

???? In short time also... I am not trying to be a jerk but if you end up at westerly hospital twice in a season from fallin in or injury while fishing maybe he should take up golf???? Again its cool he got his stuff back but THIS IS TIME 2 HE LEFT ALL HIS GEAR AND WENT TO HOSPITAL... Last time at napps he fell in left napps and his gear there or in the parking lot and went back to Tolland CT... I personally think his luck is gonna run out on time 3 seriously so far two honest people found his stuff and returned it, whats gonna happen time 3???? Sorry guys just a thought...
