It's a great argument: that we should follow the advice of the best science. There is a problem in that there is a perception that the scientific community is not to be trusted. Findings and peer review have become less relevant than who is sponsoring the study and what their agenda is.

At one time, science and the academic community had great sway in the passage of legislation. We've long since passed the era when science was beyond reproach. Over the last twenty years or so - mainly because of divisiveness over global warming - there is a widespread belief that science has become politicized. Anyone who has an email address that ends in ".edu" is considered a "dot edu guy," which is synonymous with being a liberal.
