Wow, thanks for all the follow-up info folks.

John, you really piqued my interested re: throwing eels with a conventional.

I prefer conventional reels, even at night...seems you can get more fighting leverage on a fish with a revolving spool reel (correct me if I'm wrong). Obviously, distance isn't as much of a necessity at night. But there is the convenience offered by a spinning outfit...

I guess a night-time reel would necessitate a level-wind...if you were going to eel a rocky area (like most of RI), what kind of setup would you lean towards? Would you use a heavy (50 lb. or heavier) braided line?

Swivel connection to the leader? Or tie direct?
