2010 Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby
We had my son's Cub Scout Pack Derby today and it was a blast, exhausting (and soon going to bed).
Liam's Bumblebee:
His father's (moi) car did not repeat victorious coming in second place with one win in a best of three but that's OK. Car identifiable to Geeks and fans of SciFi channel
The 2010 PWD was awesome with lots of fun for the kids. Great turnout, great work, and GREAT sportsmanship by the kids & siblings

pretty sure youre legal if you bend the axle a bit so the 4th wheel doesnt make contact I think you just have to make sure to use all 4 wheels.
Wood, Wheels and Axles
The official pine wood block must be used. The block may be shaped in any way that is desired.
Official BSA wheels must be used. The wheels may not be cut, drilled, beveled or rounded. You may remove the seams and imperfections from the wheels.
The axles may be altered, polished and lubricated.
Get those bad boys riding on 3 wheels

All depends on what the Packs rules are....they can be different from pack to pack. and the pack rules can be different from the districts.
Congrats on the cars....they look pissah. looks like a little graphite may have been used on those cars....
So how did Liam's car finish.

Our Pack rules, pretty much in line with District rules original axle slots which theoretically puts 4 wheels on the ground. Canting, three wheels, etc I wouldn't have a problem with in the Adults race but for the kids, there should be a reasonable base level.
Liam's car was fastest scout car in the pack again. The only items I did solo on the car were cutting original shape (mostly off his design), hollowing out the channel to place weights, exacto knife on electrical tape for glass & stripes, and filling putty. He did or participated in everything else: filing axle grooves (interestingly not all filed down), polishing axles and wheels, adding and glue sticking weights, sanding, priming, painting.
I did put on a vast amount of graphite. If there is a point where you can have too much graphite, we haven't found it yet. Though do have a mask on when doing volumes of graphite.

Is that a metal or plastic track? Never seen one like that.
My (now Boy Scout) sons and I helped run our local pack's Pinewood on Saturday morning too. I was instructing a new Dad in the configuration and use of the ancient DerbyMaster software. I keep an old IBM T30 laptop that still has a serial port just for this purpose!
We had 41 boys compete, a new high number over the previous year's 38. Good times and lots of smiles.

Plastic track by Derbymagic - interesting track, 38' long, some complaints. The Scoutmaster said it was a good option pricewise -v- the aluminum tracks.

Paper hubcaps, hmmm, interesting. Self lubricating wheels would be against pack / district rules.

John that great, It gets me excited just hering of the race. As I mention !11 plus yrs. donated time. And that`s the correct answer
Size, all 4 wheels and nails [use nail slot provided] no wet lub and no there is no lemit on amout of graphite. %oz.. The scout car should be builded by scouts and within the guild lines. Imagine your son wins, and than is disquilfied because you "needed more power" [Tim]
But mostly if you have a non-scout competition it keeps those that can`t help them self and mess with the kids cars at bay. Plus those deprived adults that didn`t get to play when they where tots!
Our non scout comp included the girls and those to young and old. Than we put them againt top scout cars, all just for fun.
