hence why i double check before i do anything (haven't bought tools, i just have wood laying around)! i have rapala's and such for freshwater, however the other lures have such more of an acclaim I figured to shoot for those.

The dowel already has the basic shape, just have to take it down some more from there. But that is more along the lines of just taking wood knives instead than spokeshave for those types I assume? Lathes are out of the question unfortunately.

so to set the record straight on hand carving it's: blocks = spokeshaving and dowels = knives?

the spokeshave seemed to be able to deal with dowels quick as well as the blocks that's why I ask. but for the other lures i aim to make, i cannot do those using the shave and block method or its just a PIA and will take longer to do?
