Another thing Block has that cuttyhunk doesnt have is a vast salt pond ecosystem with lots of shallows to get things started early out there... At Cuttyhunk, your depending on migratory fish coming in from where ever, but at the block in the spring, there is bait in places that will hold fish- Squid, sand eels, spearing... its all in that pond. So many rush out to the beaches to fish in the spring looking for fish and dont take into consideration that there is some serious activity going on in that salt pond.
or at least thats my theory.

Not that this affects surfcasters and other fishermen, but I've read that authorities are already planning measures to curb the baccanalian frenzy common on the Block, especially during summer holiday weekends. This will also includes mainland police who will be watching those who have gotten off the ferry drive out of town.

There was an article in the BI Times last summer about a big bash on the beach near the end of Cresent Beach by the Surf Hotel. It was one of those things where the word went out about it and the boats were loaded with people coming over for it - a lot already drunk getting off the boat. It got to be so big the police were overwhelmed. The cops interviewed said it's tough for them because they can't call in help from other towns when things get crazy like that. #^^^^& maybe you read that?
Islander, how many police officers do they have out there in the summer these days? Back in the day they had maybe 5 in the summer - 2 staties and 3 locals including the chief. Now they have something like what, 15? And they need more.

I did read some stuff last summer that pertained to certain watering holes on island as well as the commotion on the ferry. While I can't recall the source, the crackdown info is more current (maybe the Narragansett Times). The BI police expect reinforcements this summer around July 4th, for example.
