I would have thought the same thing, until it almost happened to me. Fishin the OB tourney and we hooked a smaller mako, 104 lbs. This fish immediately jumped at least 20 feet in the air about 75 yds off the stern and the line went slack. The fish charged toward us under water all the way to the stern and jumped at a full sprint right behind us. If I were standing a midship at the port gunnel I could have reached out sideways and touched the fish as it flew by above my head. It broke water 5 yards behind the boat and flew right by. 5 feet to it's right and it lands right in the cockpit. I can't help but believe that it saw the boat on the first jump and charged directly for us and then jumped when it saw the stern. JMHO, but I think the fish was in attack mode and it was no accident.

I'm sure I wrote a post on this back in 2004 but have no idea how to find it. Wish I had the cockpit video that Sandman is looking into. This footage would have definately been on ESPN without doubt.
