Nantucket - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

I'm heading to Nantucket for Memorial Day weekend, was wondering of a few good places/beaches to try out. I've been over there plenty of times but never fished. We stay on the western side of the island not too far from town. I know nobody want to get too specific but any help would be great.

Well,

Being an island there are not the normal fishing pressures that the mainland will get and, because MV is such an outstanding environ, Nantucket get's the snub when comparing area fishing.
As a local I am less than inclined to tell everyone about the islands secrets. Lou Tabory (Inshore fly fishing) spent a lot of time fishing here and that should tell you something

B Point does well outgoing, but, considering the late run this year it probably won't get any great action for a week or so more.
Right now, on the east side of the island, H20 temps are 46-47 degrees. Not many bass swimming around there !

Basically cut the island in half, North/South. Temps West are 48-50 deg (now), East of that is the previously mentioned. By Memorial Day weekend it hopefully will be 3=5 degs higher but wind direction and sunlight will determine that outcome.

Stop by Bill Fisher Tackle and Bill Pew will give you the skinny. He is an excellent supplier of swag and advice.

Hey,

Some of us working stiffs get a little miffed about the expense of things but then you realize that it is the expenses that the visitor has to endure that sucks. It isn't as bad for the locals as long as you don't piss your $ away on all the overpriced stuff that you probably could wait 'til your on the mainland to purchace. Or, order things and have 'em shipped !

It still the same: Early morning and late nights and to work by 7:30 am.
The bene's are 50 miles of rips and surf with only minutes in travel time.

You are correct about Bill. No BS and a great fisherman/Flyman/mechanic to boot. I get all my gear from him and he will be my scale if god ever grants me the cow of the century.
He has them Penn Slammers and they are the most durable spinner I have come across yet.

Anyone can feel free to contact me via mail if they would like additional info on tides and hot-spots. Tide lags are a big issue here because of the wind and swells.

Makes for some great suds slinging at 2am on a June night. Somethings are just magical

Jay,

Keepers on the south shore. Miacomet Pond is the latest. They hold up here until the water warms on the other side of Miacomet rip and they can swim around the corner and go East/North.

Been a late year this spring but I am sure that by Memorial Day it will be great. Enjoy your trip and remember to be patient, the fish you'll catch is only one cast away !

Thanks for the help everyone. I am a newbie when it comes to surf fishing but I figure when I'm out in Nantucket I have to give it a try. It is going to be tough to get out there often because I'll be working some of the time (the old company I worked for in college puts up the tent for Figawi and I come over every year for a free vaca and some extra cash). Anyway I will definitley try Brant Point and Jetties beach and if I can steal the truck maybe hit some of the 4 wheel beaches. If anyone is going to be around that weekend and wants to meet up, shoot me an email.

You are welcome. Nearly all the beach fishing can be done without 4wd. Miacomet is easy to find and just a short walk over the dunes. Outgoing (west) current is best. If you can combine that with a S-SW-W wind and your are styling. Position yourself just on the western edge of a surfline, casting into the surf with the current flowing off it into the deeper holes. Darkness is better. South coast current 1-2 hrs ahead of Harbor. Let it get running for a few hours.

Hard to say what the schedule is for Memorial day. I'll check the projected tides and we will see. Maybe we can catch up for a go if our schedules coincide. The weather/tides will play a big role in the hunt. Bring:
- Good waders
- Light
- Lure creel w/good pliers
- Assortment of swimmers, spoons and bucktails
and rubbers.
- Patience

We'll catch up.

Beachwalker, probably the best days for me will be Friday or Saturday. Though if the fish are hitting then all bets are off. I'll bring all of the above, hope the weather gets a little warmer but I know how cold it can be over there in May. I checked the tides, Friday it's high at 7 am and 8 pm and Saturday 8 am and just before 9 pm.
