Question Avet magging-how to and why?

Magging an Avet,
I'm confused how the magnets slow the aluminum spool down? I have an Avet SX and I'm thinking of magging it, because of the back lashing. Does anyone on the forum have any experience magging Avet reels. I did a search and wanted to see if opinions have changed since 2008?

I've read that you either epoxy magnets on the inside of the reel or epoxy some type of metal to stick the magnets to.

I think I need the theory behind it, to help me understand.

Question, does magging take away distance?

Thanks,
Mike

I have an Avet (un-magged) and an Abu (magged). I took a while, but I love casting the Avet. When I cast the Abu, it feels like the mag's are slowing the spool down too much; even when I dial it down to the lowest setting.

A friend of mine used earth magnets from Radio Shack and crazy/super glue. This is the article he mentioned to me: http://www.charkbait.com/article/2004/Walt_Galen.htm. I hope it helps.

The newer ones have a mag/casting control.

I suck with conventional, but just about everyone I fish with that fish with them use Abus and remove the magnets. The magnets are going to cause resistance and with resistance comes reduced distance.

On a moderate day this winter, I'm going head out to a field with a conventional outfit, bank sinkers, razor blades and a 1000yd spool of mono to stretch the arms and get some practice and become competent.

Ceramic bushings, rocket lube, throw the brakes away and become one with the reel.

May fortune favor the foolish....

I was going to use it for jigging at the canal.

In the past I would use a Abu 7000C3 with mono. When I changed to braid it took some getting use to and eventually changed to spin due to birds nests...
A friend recently took a 38lber on 30 lb mono jigging, and with that said I was thinking about giving it another chance. The Abu has come down with a nasty squeel during the cast, so I thought why not give the Avet a try. Before the season, I broke down the Abu and gave it a tune up and found that some of the plastic gears were bunged up...

If you're using it for jigging, I'd go with a heavy spinning outfit and 50lb braid that can cast up to 4oz. I can't bring myself to jig any heavier than that.

This winter while your tweeting, texting, facebooking and god knows what else you do. Put a bucket of sand next to your desk and grind away, get some callouses on those palmolive smooth digits of yours. Manly men don't tape casting fingers.

Not all of us are electricians who have zapped, burnt, drilled and mangled their hand into a nerveless leather glove.

About 20+ years ago I was at a friends house and his dad came home from work (iron worker). He tell his son to get the razor blades and rock salt and sits down at the kitchen table. Then he proceeds to cut the blisters on his hands and pack them with rock salt.
With my eyebrows raised, I asked why are you doing that? He said, "its the fastest way to build calluses".

I miss Uncle Sonny....
