North Channel Paddle Board Picture

Passed through the North Channel yesterday outside Boston Harbor and saw this dude. I couldn’t believe it. This guy (with no shirt on) was coming from the South East (no clue where he came from) and he was headed towards Winthrop. There were no boats around him and he was solo. I heard a few guys on the radio talking about it and it was nuts to actually see. If you know the area (many of you do) you know how dangerous this was, especially on a cold windy day. A boat did go by to ask if he needed help and he ignored the captain.

Totally missed him. Well I guess the CG did too.
Looks like an Indian misplaced in time.

a friend of mine has one of those paddle boards. she lives on a lake and was out using it one day. she lost her grip on the paddle and it sank right to the bottom. there she was in the middle of this lake with no paddle...DOH!

Let's stop hating on this kid. He's more bad@ss than the rest of us will ever be. He wasn't harming anyone - just laughing in the face of nature.

Oh and Clambelly, did it ever occur to your friend to lay down and paddle it?

Oh I wouldn't go that far.. not by a long shot... I'll stick with my original post..

I wonder if "captain badass" knew since he traveled outside the surf zone his SUP was considered a Vessel by the CG

Captain Chum

You can call me @ss, but I haven’t earned the title Captain (my sister is a Captain) and it’s subjective whether to precede it with bad or dumb. I use a different name anyway.

I’m not going to attempt a resume but I will say I’ve been on and around this water for a long time. I sail it, surf it, fish it, and paddle it. I don’t know everything and I never will; but I do know myself and my physical limits…and I’m not as young as I look.

On Sunday I was just going for a paddle. That’s all. You saw me crossing from the tip of Lovell’s, in a bee-line, toward the #10 can. That vector is pretty perpendicular to the channel. It was purposely chosen to minimize the amount of paddling through traffic. I was aware of the wind, the tide (current), the time, and the weather forecast. I was very aware of the boats that had passed (Carnival), those that were coming (distant tanker), and those around me (you guys). I wasn’t intentionally ignoring the skipper; but I had a clear objective and I was focused on it.

My wetsuit top was down around my hips to keep a reasonable body temperature. Paddling is a lot of work and part of the energy that goes into that work is lost as heat. Sweating leads to dehydration and other bad things. I wasn’t just working on my sweet tan.

You observed only a tenth of my total trip (the final bit). I admit to taking measured risk; but I wasn’t being reckless.

A risk is a risk because there are consequences. Sometimes people put themselves in risky situations learn something. That being said, accidents do happen. I accept that fact and the implied consequences (and so do Coast Guard recruits, I hope…).

It’s never about looking nature in the eye. It’s primitive coexistence.

Lifejacket, radio, and then what?

These are just my thoughts and are definitely on one side of two extremes. Reason is a compromise somewhere in the middle.

Please don’t run me over this weekend!

Crocker20,

Have you ever been stopped by the CG or other Authorities? Is it legal to be out there on that with no safety gear?

Good on ya, Crocker. Wait until they see ya catching the bump on a honkin' Nor'Easter, eh?

Fishermen, I respect your passion and love to fish, but there's other things that competent, resourceful folks can do on the water too. Paddling/Rowing open water has been around for centuries.

Hope ya all had a good season! Cheers.

Not sure it is much different than a guy on a windsurfer and I see them out there in way worse weather than that guy. If he has a wetsuit and a board he can get home more safely than many guys in a small boat.
