Just as an observation from someone who tries to pay attention to baitfish patterns and migrations. I have never seen so many striped mullet on migration in Rhode Island coastal waters than I have this year. In a normal RI season we may see mullet in the wash for about a 2 sometimes 3 week stretch that normally runs from mid September when they begin dropping out from the estuaries and salt ponds to the first week of October. This season I started noticing them in the open surf during the second week of September (Sept 10in Newport) and they are still in Rhode Island coastal areas as we speak. I have even heard reports of them in the wash on Block Island’s west side – something I had never seen or heard of before this season.
Mullet tend to improve surf fishing catch rates and that is no secret. Take this past weekend as a good example. There were plenty of fish, both bass and blues (many quality fish) weighed in for the M/S Club Tournament even though wind conditions were less than ideal. Mullet like to hug the shoreline and this gave surfcasters a good shot at fish that were in the first wave.
When abundance is high you tend to see any species’ range expanded into a wider area and migration periods last longer – this obviously has occurred in Rhody.
