Zombie Surf
Zombie Surf
It began just after dusk on the night of November 2nd. All four members of Denny Needles group headed out for a night of casting the porkchop. Covering the SW corner were the Troll and the Tattooed Man. Two miles off to the north were Denny Needlefish and Darter Al. At 7:10 pm what appeared to be a shooting star streaked across the dark sky from east to north. What set it apart from other shooting stars was it lasted for a full 10 seconds before breaking apart in a fiery display. Both groups stood in awe as they watched it fizzle out. Was it just another wonder on this island that always seems full of them… or was it something else that entered the atmosphere?
Later that night Troll and Tattoo snuck down to the hole of snakes while Denny Needle and Darter tried their luck at the Black Pebble. The temps at the hollow now dropping into the mid 20s provided a fine coating of frost on the scrub brush which sparkled eerily when illuminated by their head lamps. Down at the cobble’s edge the bass ate black SS Needles and Redfins retrieved at the slowest of speeds providing the best bite in four nights. The surf was so flat and the night so black that takes were heard before they were felt or seen.
At 2 AM a light appeared about 200 yards out from the point named for Lewis. Darter questioned whether it could be a skisher? Denny said, “No way with the currents out there”. They watched as the light went on and off and from white to red, appearing to be getting closer all the time. Then it disappeared. As the tide began to flood the bite inexplicably died they decided to call it a night at that point.
As Needle and Darter began to ascend the bluffs they noticed movement at the surfs edge. They turned on their lights and noticed that a half dozen or so people were walking out from the surf. What really seemed strange was these people were not in waders or wet suits but dressed in torn clothing and looking very pale. Al and Denny scrambled up the bluff when these strangers didn’t respond to a greeting. Must be New Yawkas they thought.
Back at the hole of snakes Troll and Tattoo were still casting when the Troll heard a grunt off to his right. In the darkness he could see a human form at the water’s edge. He turned on his light and illuminated what appeared to be a commercial fisherman tangled in rope struggling to get out of the wash. Climbing off his perch the Troll went over to assist the stranger by offering a helpful hand. The stranger took his hand and then, to the Troll’s horror, tried to bite it! The Troll yanked his hand away and screamed. Tattoo who was 25 yards away heard the scream and came running to assist the Troll. Scrambling out of the water the Troll yelled “Zombie” and they both high-tailed it back to the snake trail and were back at their vehicle in record time.
Meeting back at the cottage Darter, Needle, Troll, and Tattoo shared similar stories about the “strangers” they met. They then turned on the TV and began watching a new show on AMC – “The Walking Dead”. There would be no sleep tonight.

Thanks Thumper - trying to lighten it up in here.
On a very sad side note - there were posters on the island that week for a missing person. They found his body this past Sunday in Rodmans Hollow. Apparant suicide. RIP
