US Air would be flying one of the longer range newer 737s on that route, or maybe one of America West's 757s.
A contrail from a twin engined airliner would have some separation at its source, no?

Like the article said, strange lights have been seen in the sky for many years.
I remember reading in one of Eric Sloane's books on early farmers and they're
implements, that in a farmer's diary he found in an old barn in Fair lawn NJ from the
1800s, he wrote of 6 bright red lights that crossed the sky at a slow speed and
then sped off at amazing speed and disappeared.

Has anyone had a look at this? Maybe that contrail off LA last month was a Chinese Missile. Might not be true but sure makes you think. Scary stuff........
