Post office rant

I took a wrapped package to the PO yesterday and was asked the usual questions. Then I was asked what type of box it was. I said carboard. The guy asked a couple more questions and I finally said it was one of their boxes that I received. He then said that I had to send it priority (I think it was priority, but whatever it was it would cost more). I refused and asked for my package back. I took it to the PO near my gym and wasn't asked there. Be careful how you answer if asked about their boxes. No wonder they can't make money.

I think the simple answer here is that the box (which I'm assuming was a Priority Mail box) has PRIORITY MAIL printed on the side to help workers locate expedited packages.

I might also speculate that as boxes are included in the price of a Priority or Express shipment, they would want you to pay the higher rate as they don't really know if it's a recycled box or not.

Generally speaking, I've always been satisfied with the USPS. Priority Mail is a pretty good deal for smaller packages when you consider the options. Most Post Offices are conveniently located as well...

Although, just the other day I wish the freaking mailman could have waited a few more minutes for me to come to the door so I didn't have to chase him down to get my new bag

Why don't you just call it a pocketbook? Everyone here knows it's not a bag, and we don't think any less of you. I just hope you weren't wearing heels while you were chasing after him. That's dangerous and irresponsible.

I like the PO's attempted flat rate box scam. You would have to mail 100 jigs to make out using one of those boxes. What a joke.

There is fine print on the box that indicates that the boxes can not be altered along with the consequences.

It is against Federal Law to use a post office priority mail box for any other purpose than priority mail. It's also against the law to roll them inside out to conceal them or to wrap one in anything to conceal.

Luds not sure why you say their flat rate is a scam? I use it regularly. I can fit approximately 60lbs of lead ingots in each one. For $12 to ship across country I don't think you'd find cheaper?

Their small flat rate box is the fastest cheapest way of shipping small items. 2-3 days across country. No-one else can do that for $5 plus insurance?

Larry I fail to find the humor in that comment considering the damage that this rumor has done to me. All started by my pal Vinny....

Don't you think if I wanted to rat any of you out I'd have done it long ago?

My wife had wrapped it in brown paper. You could not tell it was a priority box.

Dumb look

I must have that dumb look.
Tried to mail a turnip in a 4.95 box and they said I would have to leave to tape it shut and the price would be 5.70.
Sent my wife to another P.O. and they charged 5.70 for what i thought was a 4.95 PO box.
Do you think they are charging by the weight???

The postal clerk could guess with certainty that the wrapped box is a priority box by the its mere dimensions. They could unwrap the box at their discretion. If it wasn't for a constant line at the PO there would be more enforcement.

Bingo!

I'd note though that it holds a med Skinz plug bag insert almost perfectly, and the hardware is gold plated so I don't have to worry about corrosion from seawater

OLDGOAT how did you fit a turnip into a box that measures less than 2" thick? It's $4.85 online and I believe $5 at the po.

There is a 4 lb limit international for small flat rate, don't believe this is applicable to flat rate boxes?

Something tells me this wasn't a small flat rate box which is the $5 and it was sent priority mail in a standard box?

I agree, it's worth it if you're mailing really heavy stuff. Problem is that I can ship Priority with the same size USPS non flat rate box for 5 bucks. You don't need a flat rate box 95% of the time. Why is it the PO never has the free standard boxes?

Smart is a 99 cents mailer box or padded envelope and First Class. $3 total. The $$$$ add up if you're mailing alot. First class gets there just as fast as Priority despite what they might say!

yea but in talking to the po guy in worcester he says first class is more likely to be lost compared to priority because of the way they handle it. And I agree with this Mike but you can't prove delivery on a first class envelope and if you accept credit cards you need to be able to prove delivery on a chargeback. For personal use it's probably ok?

The closest you get to seawater is when you're out on your deck. The gold plated hardware might be overkill. Why would you need an Aquaskinz bag inserts anyways? Don't you know they're for fishing?

I usually pack things in regular boxes and when they figure out the cost, it's often cheaper to ship them priority than parcel post if it's a box that isn't too big. I would say that priority is a better deal than parcel post in a lot of cases. That's not saying it's a good deal, though. The postal rates are still ridiculously high most of the time.
