25 or 27 - no questions asked. I have a 22 and thought I would loose a fish - I upgraded to the reel to 27

my suggestion is based on what size rod you use. rods 10'-11' i'd go with the 25. anything over 11' and the 27 fits best. rods under 10' do well with the 22. it's more about balance as even the 22 is more than capable of turning any size bass out in the surf. good luck with the reel.

25, no need of the retrieve speed of the 27 unless you like a particularly fast retrieve IMO.

I think you said you were a Penn guy previously. You might want to check to see what the retrieve ratio was of your favorite penn and look to get the ZB that is comparable. None of them will fail you on line capacity.

I never thought that the 22 couldn't turn or stop a fish - the drag is sweet. I was however concerned of getting a nice running fish at the very end of the cast.

25 or 27

Aren't all the spools interchangeable nowadays?

I couldn't see running 25# mono on the 22, so the 25 would be the minimum I would suggest.

What do spare spools run, $200 or so? Get the 25 as the gift, and pick up a spare 27 spool for extra insurance sometime down the road.
