Probably safer now 0.5% chance you flip, die and, drown in winter. 5% chance you get run over by some drunk first year boater heading into Newport on their 40' SeaRay they just bought with their bonus check during summertime.

I used to race Lasers and 470s out of CBI in the early 80s. Probably could have raced into Nationals if stayed focused enough.

I've been contemplating the fishability of a 470 - plus I want my son to learn from the demands of sailing - lots of life lessons in small boat sailing.

I used to race district 7 championships at BB race week in New bedford and Padanarum.. I remember wearing a vest with towels sewed into it to give me an additional 10 lbs of wt to hold down the laser ... I was only 155lbs and the "ideal build" when the wind was over 15 was 6' 5" and 180-200 lbs... Dave Perry and several others... and Moose McClintok who would carry a laser with one arm from his car to the launch location

NYC still does frostbiting, although at my size I was 'discouraged' from attempting for fear of sinking at the dock

Wow - that's a steal. Bigger than I want and a year ahead of what I want. Besides - I need to work on the existing fleet before I get anything else.

Love this small boat talk of Dutchman's, and Scots, and 420/470/Larks/Lasers/2man Lasers, etc...

Want severe club racing?

N10s

I owned 2 lasers.. One was a practice boat. The other was strictly for racing. I used to sail out to Brenton tower, flip my laser, climb up to the top of the tower and jump off... And swim back to my laser.

First Laser was 13719 and my second laser was in the 75000 series... my current one is in the 175,000 series.... my first one was named blondterror.. a nickname I got working in a boatyard in rowayton,CT I always thought the original ones made by performance sailcraft in Quebec were the stiffest hulls and driest deck/hull seams... I used to race against bruce kirby (laser designer) on tuesday nights off fish island in long island sound...
