Not that this will help Gloucester, but if you get a leak in the ceiling, drive a nail or screw into the spot where you first see the water. Open the hole up a little bit and leave the nail there. You want to attract all the water to one spot so you can control/catch it, and to keep it from running all over the upperside of the ceiling.

on the JOB

i remember this Lady askin me to come see her ceiling
and i freaked and ran to get a trash can that didn't leak

the ceiling was about to burst
couldn't believe how much water was up there
it was holding it like a swimming pool

as they watched i jammed a long screw driver
into the belly of the beast
and water shot straight down almost filling that barrel

in my opinion you need a full metal wide piece of flashing
followed by peel and stick as your first layer of shingle
then put the original color back on over those

consider buying the heating element too
