I always have such a hard time when I hear that someones mother has died.

The loss of ANY family member is hard, particularly if it's the first time it happens.
It doesn't get easier as you get older, but one consolation is that you had time to develop deeper relationships and create many, many happy memories. That can help you in these times of need.
