ADOBE is the absolute worst program that is constantly trying to update
every time you look at the wall,,,,off it goes..

so go into control panel and shut off automatic updates (for now)
then when you have time ......... you can turn it back on
(theres an icon in there if your running win XP)

also, you want to download the free program called
"whats running"
which allows you to terminate processes and applications at will

also showing you every single ip address your connected to
and every program that's running ESPECIALLY in the start menu
which will slow a computer down to a crawl --> LIMIT THOSE

RAVEN - ARE YOU ON DIGITAL CRACK? Sorry bub but you are way off the reservation here - while there are some elements of possible tangential truths in this post it has bigger exposure to do harm. I'll defer to you for growing things, please defer computer systems to others - purdy please. Not trying to do a geek smackdown but you are beyond your knowledge zone.

DO NOT disable automatic updates unless you PROMISE and FAITHFULLY download and run them manually every few days when available. If you cannot successfully do that then keep auto updates.

ED:
  • Bandwidth speed is fine - don't worry about it.
  • Keep Auto Updates on
  • Make sure you defrag your hard drive twice and then once per month.
  • Don't go hunting around looking for what to turn on and turn off.
  • Have your computer run Virus scans at least once per week (I do daily at night)
  • Run Malwarebytes , updated, full scan. Free for home use.
  • You never shutdown and restarted in 10 seconds. Guaranteeeeeed

Thumbs down I totally disagree JOHN

AND, i do not like you condescending attitude towards my computer knowledge at all ..........

as i have been to the same school you went to only TWICE
and i have close to $5000 in computer books alone

i have never smoked CRACK-> didn't appreciate the reference

i said turn off auto updates (for now) to indicate and
see if this solves the (your) problem

!.) not turn them off forever- GEESCH

2.) they can be rescheduled to run when your not
using the PC
like at 4: am

3.) i specifically mentioned ADOBE not the microsoft updates ||||which can be configured separately |||||

4.) i suggested he look at all programs running with a beautiful FREE program that i find extremely useful

5.) i KNOW your method for diagnosing computer slow-downs
is completely by the book using NO insightful or creative thinking - its samo samo MS 1,2,3,

Most people have WAY to many programs running in their start menu to begin with , so it's a logical place to EXPLORE

it's EXPLORING JOHN _learning to explore your personal computer....

LISTEN AND LEARN oh wizard of "Microsoft RULES"

sorry.................. if i
ILL advised one of your clients
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
NOW i have to spend considerable time meditating away much hostility

...........................i'm outta here..................................

Raven - I used "digitaL" and I used smileys:

I don't want to come across as condescending at all but you need to understand that sometimes your computer recommendations are not the best. Some of it is OK, some of it isn't. Some if it may be misleading.

!.) not turn them off forever- GEESCH
No need to turn them off, period. Much safer that way. Yes, there is a chance some patch will crash a system. BEST method is to autodownload but let YOU choose when to install. Only do this if YOU PROMISE to do them no longer if they are a week old (give others a chance to break 'em) AND you know there is not a patch fixing a critical vulnerability under major exploit at the time.
Servers different story but someone actively manages those.

2.) they can be rescheduled to run when your not

Just leave autoupdate on.

3.) i specifically mentioned ADOBE not the microsoft updates ||||which can be configured separately ||||| Just keep it updated, and flash, and Java

4.) i suggested he look at all programs running with a beautiful FREE program that i find extremely useful
Half of beautiful free programs do more damage than they fix

5.) i KNOW your method for diagnosing computer slow-downs

Its not that way at all, I use more creative thinking than you can imagine but I've also been doing this professionally for 15 years for organizations from 5 people to 300 to 3,000.

We love you kid, but I can assure you my computer advice is superior. Gardening, farming? I gladly and quickly defer to you.

BobT - what do you have for Internet?

1.5GB is a HUGE file and you should probably process before uploading.
