Jim, as you know I sell mobile banking software. As a result I have every smartphone available and a few that are just in beta.
My recommendation is Android. It is my go to phone. Very stable operating system, lots of apps available and very rugged. Battery lasts at least twice as long as the iPhone. Lots of "flavors" available with the Android operating system. Just make sure the carrier is Verizon.

there are a few GZ versions, one even comes standard with tide, moon/sun - set/rise, and thermometer. All are basic compared to the smart phones out now.
Another great phone is the droid Motorola Defy by T-mobile. Also shock, water and dust resistant plus it's a droid, light years ahead of the GZ in terms of technology. Thing with any droid phone is that you need a to dish out another $30/month (t-mobile) on top of your monthly charges in order to use it. Had mine for over 5 months, dropped it plenty of times, dunked it in lakes, tub, buckets with no problems. My uses it in the shower blasting his music. I'm a contractor and use it on the field. Really a tough little phone. The $30 charge is worth it for me as I'm able to keep up with emails, use it as a gps, locate lumber yard/stores around the area you're in and much more... the apps alone is worth it IMO.
With that said, if you're looking for a phone to just make calls, text and simple tasks then go with the GZ.
Good luck.

I've had 2 GZs for years. I love them. This phone I linked to is the first iphone -like smart phone that is water/shock proof and its a GZ. It is an android os and it is offered through verizon.

Dang, I love my gzone, If this is decent, I'd get one too. I need a smartphone.
Don't forget you need a data plan, another 30 bucks a month from Verizon.
I use 1500 min a month on my phone aready.

Had no idea about the commando version. Good stuff. The older GZ models never appealed to me. Keep us posted on this one and how it functions and holds up. Looks like a winner.
Wirefly has them for under $20 with new contract just so you know.
