There is no reason to carry when your fishing at all. I have been gun owner for a long time. I think some of the reasons for packing a gun on this thread are plain out stupid.
|
thats why they call it fishing not catching

I agree, i see no point in carrying a gun while fishing. I don't fish places like Quincy( and never would) but I think my knife would suffice as protection if I ever needed it...

Yep! big factor is the last part It's not a big deal as long as it's legit. And as far as a reason.. if it makes you feel comfortable or safer... do it! You don't need to justify yourself to anyone..unless ya use it

I have to say the trend in this thread surprises me. I wouldn't necessarily feel much need to carry on a boat, but in many of the urban areas I fish it is pepper spray minimum mandatory, as far as I am concerned. If one has legal permit, I would see little reason not to carry many places. If there is much doubt about how and when the gun enters the equation, the carrier probably should consider relinquishing the permit.

That youtube video is scary. He states he is "out of rounds", and wham, another round fires off, not even close to the targets.... he didn't even realize he had a live one in chamber

I carry about 75% of the time (used to be more around 95%)
In some situations I carry while fishing depending on where I am, but the only time I have ever pulled my gun was while fishing, another time I didn't have one and wished I had.
Only gun pull incident happened soon after I got my LTC about 14 yrs ago (god I'm gettin old). Little River in S. Dartmouth. Middle of nowhere. Came back to my car about 3am and 3 knuckleheads tryin to break into my car (where my cell phone was). Staying back, I turned on little mag lite and asked what they were doing. They told me to piss off. I said no, that's my car. I said look, i don't want any trouble, please leave. They started to spread out and circle me and I reached down into my waders and pulled my 9mm out, holding it behind my back as I backed up, pleading with them to stop and leave. They continued to threaten me, I pulled my gun out from behind my back, did no point it at them, and again, requested they leave or there was going to be a loud bang and when the smoke clears, one of you is not going to be a happy camper. Fortunately, when they saw the gun they went whoa and took off. I jumped in car, locked door, and called the police, explained what happened, and had to demand them to send a cruiser. Cop showed up and I left gun in car showed him, my ids, and he said ok. That was it. I was scared SHATLESS. No heroics on my part. I just didn't want these 3 punks to go down street and call cops saying some wacko just pulled a gun on them and now I'm the bad guy. Never heard anythin about it from PD.
Incident #2 happened at Chatham lite house. Was gettin some nice fish in the inlet. Had a couple piled up on sand, when something moving caught my attention. It was a coyote trying to drag away a 20# fish that was my paycheck. I yelled and took a step at it. Thing started growlin at me lik it was gonna attack. I had no where to go. Backwards was the rippin current of the inlet. Thought this was a great thing. Gonna get bit by a coyote....would't this be a good time to have one of my guns.....that's sitting at home. Next day went out and got my .38 stainless for carrying on the beach.....
I pray to god I never need to use it, do everything to avoid puttin myself in a situation, but when/ if the time comes, I don't wanna look back on it and think I could have saved myself or others if I did have it with me instead of in my gunsafe.
Any time fishin Q-town it was as standard as my tin of Skoal.....
As for the boat, used to bring it with us on the boat comm bassin. Why? Necessary? don't know, probably not, just did. But the day we were chummin & chunkin off Noman's pullin our pork and I came out and popped off a couple of 40's outta the glock, I thought the other 2 on board were gonna jump out of the boat........An attention getter.

West Wall about 10 years ago in April. Bunch of punks catching 16" bass and killing every one. So I casually walk up and explain that they can't kill fish that small. Mr head Punk points a 9MM at my forehead and says "Oh no? Stop me". So I very slowly back off the Wall. Since then I carry depending on where I fish. RI, yes. The Canal, no. The Back, no. On my boat, I'm not saying.

No boat, back in the suds.
