then
that wouldn't be changes inn evolution to acomodate environment
it would be a series of bad choices and lack of judgement indicating lesser brain capacity.

I sold my bike when I moved to NY, and every day the wisdom of that move gets reinforced. Three people have died on roads near my house since June 1 of this year. And it's always some dumb-arsed kid on a snarly Jap crotch rocket, never a Harley or big road Honda.
Nothing I hear happening in Woonsocket ever surprises me---where the hell can you swim there, the Blackstone River?

Unfortunately Beachwalker, you can't fault the kids for the stupidity of the parents. I agree with Darwinism in the case of adults, but when adults allow their children to go unsupervised in bad conditions, the idiot remains.
I know that accidents happen, even good parents make mistakes... but some of these incidents are insane.
A girl died at Horseneck Beach yesterday... she was in the ocean with some of her family... none of them could swim.
Its not a wading pool... even good swimmers can go down in the ocean.
It boggles the mind.

Absolutely right Schoolie,
Don't get me wrong, I feel for these people. Accidents are accidents and they can happen to the best of us. When it is our time then it is..........
It boggles my mind that people can be so inept, poorly informed or plain unsupervisory. We all know that children are a handful to keep track of and it is SO sad when something terrible like this happens.
5 or 6 years ago a big swell arrived down here and all the warnings were up. I am into surfing and am a strong swimmer but it was pretty rough that day. two tourists got swept off and wore themselves out and drowned. Fighting a rip current is many times a losing battle. Well, Cam Neely and another Bruin were down here and both got swept out only to barely make it back. It scared the living crap out of them and made them aware of the intense danger that the ocean holds.
It blows my mind that people think the beach is like a wading pool some days. I WILL NOT bring out amateur/beginners surfcasting, especially at night without STRICT instructions and repeated commentary about PAYING ATTENTION AND NOT FORGETTING THAT WAVES COME OUT OF NOWHERE AND CAN KNOCK YOU OFF THE BEACH AND PRETTY MUCH END THE FUN, QUICK !
Darwinism is very sad when it is a human life at stake. Somehow, when it is an animal, we accept it.
Life guards were VERY busy down here this weekend and it was barely headhigh. People got into all sorts of trouble. Weak swimmers, poor judgement. Just plain ignorance.
Here to continued respect for Mother Ocean and what she is capable of.
God Bless the unfortunate

Hey, guys, hate to go all religious here, but if any of you are religious, say a prayer for these families?
They're hurting now. Death is death, be it a medical issue or a stupid accident. Those mothers are barely getting out of bed today.
I've asked God to give them whatever help he would have given me today.

It is scary... four people drowned on Lake Michigan too. You wonder how much alcohol is involved to have so many incidents over the weekend.
I was out at Smith Point a couple years ago and guy was throwing a toy out for his dog while his toddler, maybe 3 years old, played about 20 yards away in the water. This was just to the right side of the rip on the dropping tide. I'm sure you know how strong the current is there...
Anyway, the dog is getting swept towards the rip each throw and barely getting back, the kid doesn't have a pfd and it was scaring me. I was kinda half-@ssed tossing a bluefish plug into the rip and watching them. Finally the dog is getting tired and gets swept towards me... luckily, I was able to take a couple steps out and grab its collar. The guy comes running down and is now about 40 yards away from his kid.
I freakin' lost it and just screamed at him to stay there and watch his kid, and that I'd bring the dog up to him. I don't understand the mentality. Just put a little thought into what's going on

You ain't sh*&%ttin' Schoolie,
The Town and State have spent MILLIONS on an incredible Bike/walking path network here and you can STILL FIND a tourist aimlessly riding a bike, on the road, RIGHT NEXT TO THE BIKE PATH, with not a clue what is going on. This is what I mean when I use the Darwinism analogy.
Some of these creatures are LUCKY to have survived this long.
I have seen that scenario at Smiths, Eel, 'Sconset and Great Point and it is absolutely mortifying. And then we are supposed to feel sorry for some of these idiots.
I just don't get this mentality (or lack of) at all. I have been accused of being TO into fishing or surfing sometimes. ALWAYS by people that don't have a frickin' clue that THIS IS WHAT IT TAKES TO SURVIVE. One has to practice, pay attention, learn and prevent the preventable.
What can happen will. I believe too many people watching too much TV gives them a false, illusionary sense of reality. It is almost like they think "that only happens in the movies".
I think most of us know better.
Once again, God bless the unfortunate........

What gets me.....heard the report of the poor little girl in Westport on WBZ radio.....and what gets me.....they interviewed a guy that was out in a boat in that area....and he said "Yep there were big swells out there.....where I was, maybe to 8 feet....the day was calm and clear, so I don't know, maybe there was a storm out at sea or something....."
This guy should have his boat taken away.....I mean, you go out on a boat, and you're not even aware of the warnings of the rough seas from the remnants of the tropical storm that passed to the south this weekend?......

30 years ago I was with my Dad and we were fishing at the Mouth of the Connecticut. It was pee soup fog. A powerboat shows up out of the fog and the guy is cheering that he actually "found" someone. He asks "do you guys know where Watch Hill is ?". He has got a placemat chart in his hands. My Dad points East and says "That way. but you gotta watch out because of Fishers Island, etc." and before he can finish, the joker slams it into gear and heads off.
It is a memory I wil NEVER forget.
What a world we live in. Now tell me that it is against personal freedoms to impose a Boating License on people..........

I hate these reports!
This kind of news really upsets me. I'm sorry for their loss. Kids generally don't know their limits, especially in situations they've never experienced before or alone. Adults do know better, or if they don't, plain and simply they should've done their homework. Too many times I read about so called "accidents" only come to find out they were caused by some other factor (speed, lack of experience, ignorance, alcohol, "we only left him for a second", etc.), which had the victim been in control of he would probably have survived. My girls have nicknames for me like Dr No and The Warden because they think I hold the reins too tight on them. But I look at a situation they're and say, "What could go wrong? What could possibly happen to them?" And then I tell them the limits and my reasons why. I don't agree with parents who use some credo like, "Well eventually all kids are going to fall and break something." Maybe, maybe not, but not on my watch and not if it's totally and obviously preventable. This is probably a big factor in why I don't get to fish more, but the fish will be there in a few years when they grow up and their own common sense kicks in, however by then they'll be boy hungry and I'll have to protect them for other reasons.

gee....how did you know?????
I know it sounds kind of cruel....but it wouldnt bother me so much if the idiots on the road hurt themselves.....its when they hurt someone else in the process....

Booze kills, no doubt about it and people driving, boating or canoeing drunk are idiots. A couple years back a friend and I were fishing late September well off of Strawberry Point in Cohasset, not a cold day, but the wind was howling SW and the water was cool to say the least. Don't know why but we decided to try the cove inside and as we motored in, I notice heads bobbing in the swell. We picked up 4 kids, drunk as skunks, each had to be hauled over the side by us as they had been in the water too long and none had motor control. Only one had a life jacket on and later after dropping them off we found illegal lobsters in the bottom of both of the 2 swamped canoes. Four stupid drunk kids thought it would be fun to pull someone else's lobster pots and if we weren't there that day, lives would have been lost. I watching amazed that one of my own teens is still alive, it's a wonder some reach adulthood .

I never ever allowed alcohol on my boat and I am very very cautious when I am out with others that allow it on theirs.
for many of the above reasons and more I am completely in favor of a license to operate a power driven vessel of any kind
