Winter How to get togethers
We have Plugfest. MikeCC has hosted rod building in the past. I would like to see more about reel repair, spin and conventional, cleaning, upgrades, etc.
Thoughts? Suggestions? Sponsors? Manufacturers?

Great idea! Might be combined with chance to share a beer, optional.
If you have volunteer homes to host might be the way to go to keep expenses down, unless reel manufacturers/B&T's are willing to host. I've gone to a couple demos at SWE in Middletown RI, they have a nice big room.

The edge has a lot of seminars and get togethers threw out the winter.
All free and they order pizzas!
They've done vs maintenance with Craig, tuna days, bucktail tying, surf and boat expos too.
Pete and DZ should have a list together shortly. Look in the vendors section for updates.

I think a cod fishing from shore trip would be fun. BBQ on the beach, with the very slight chance of catching a cod.

love the reel upkeep idea, can be a pricey problem if you don't know how to fix it, never mind time consuming if you have to send it out

Love the smelting in maine...hit the camps for an overnighter...I already got 2 trips going up there.
Its a cheap night....$15 pp a tide for a heated shack on the river...last year we had a good night w/ 300 in the bucket. they are delicious too.

If timing works out I would like all the above, heck I would do a smelting trip around here (Boston docks) if someone wanted to show me the ropes. Much different occassion obviously than a Maine smelt shack. While I would like to see the reel repair, I realy dont think I would ever trust myself to actually do it, but maybe...

This Fedex driver I know has fashioned himself a bit of an expert on smelt. Following them north as the freeze occurs in January. Two years ago, fishing five of those little rods, he brought home 98 #'s first time up. It never came in that good after that, but that is phenomenal. I'd go.
As far as rod repair. I might be able to help out. I don't have any rods at the moment that need to be glued back together, but maybe some other aspect. I have been making all my own rods for years. Nothing as fancy as Salty's, but they only time they fail is when I fall on them.
I would love to have greater confidence in reel repair so I am not afraid of at least taking them apart to clean them.

I have been considering doing a rodbuilding thing this winter. Basicly I would supply a blank and guides etc and we would all build a rod. Cost would be such that everyone gets a top of the line custom rod for about $100 less than the same factory rod (maybe $250 total cost) but you build it yourself. I would do the guide layouts ( but you wrap them) and probably mount the reel seats just to get things rolling more quickly. I'm in Cumberland , RI. If any interest , PM me. If I get a decent number of guys interested I'll do it. Could do more than one if there is a big interest.
i would be happy to look at and show people how to repair rods at the same time. just remember , not all rod can be repaired! Guides are easy , broken rods are near impossible if broken in the top half , behind the reel seat is doable , etc. You can't work miracles.
All I need to do is clean out some space in the cellar so people can sit around the rod lathe. Could be almost any time except of course Holiday weeks.

Saltheart I would be interested in a rod building class. Always wanted to get into it. I would need a boat blank. Got enough surf rods.
