This thread and it being Thanks Giving Day I will take my time to say
Thank you, Dr. Howard Berlin, my Cardiologist at the time just before my triple by-pass.
Laying on a gurney in the E.R. at around 1:00 AM and this guy says,"What kind of Cigaretts DID YOU USED TO Smoke"! What, is that a trick question? The Doctor says:"You will promise me RIGHT NOW that you will never smoke again and I will make you well!" I did, He did and here I am. 24 years ago!!!!

I'm not participating but, if anyone is near me they are welcome to work out with me. It might help those that don't have the motivation at the beggining or a broad base of exercise knowledge.

I life weights and do cardio.

You can make your waist smaller by tighten your stomach muscles and holding your breath and making it larger by doing the opposite.
There will be larger folks that get inaccurate measurements because they will need to tighten up and hold breath just to see the numbers on the tape.

Give up food.
Buy protein powder and mix it with milk and take a multivitamin. Have a fiber drink with Metamucil once a day to fulfill your fiber needs. I lost 60# that way and have kept it off for the last two years. I only occasionally eat a regular meal.
After a while you start to view food as disgusting.

Put it in a blender and drink it!

Given the diversity of the human species, there is no “normal” human genome sequence. We are all mutants.

that's difficult when you grow food ( a celebration of life) yet still good advice.... in a sense

protein is now my rescue fix when i crash hard perhaps on sugar in
the chocolate coffee creamer or come down fast on just 2 coffee's.

Normally i'll head for the frozen OJ to make a quick sugar pick me up
drink... but it's the protein (says my Doctor) that sustains you the longest before you run out of steam again. It's the way to go.

so Joe, are you just using WHEY protein ?

I wont be officially joining the "challenge" but want to offer some inspiration as the last several months have been very eye opening for my husband and I. We now eat nutritiously ....not caloric-ly (is that even a word?)

We saw program on PBS with dr Joel Furhman and after being intrigued by his ideals we bought two of his books. Since July my hubby has gone from 280 to 235 to date.....lighter than when we met 18 years ago. He has been doing some work outs but not any more or less than he was doing prior to the change in diet. I myself am down from from 195 to 178 (also since July) by simply changing my diet alone.....if anything my already limited exercise level has been less since then due to my job and circumstances had me working 50-60 hours a week also since July...sitting at a desk for 12 hour days. Whats my point here? My point is that I have always been what you would call "plump" my whole life. It seemed the harder I tried with diets & exersise the worse I failed. Over the last 16 years I just kept gaining a pound here...a pound there....nothing seemed to work for me until now.

At first we used his books as a guide to get started....basically more (or mostly) fruits & veggies. We did not stick strictly to his plan by any means because it was to extreme for us but we drastically reduced our fats and meat intake. We by no means eliminated these things or went vegan. We started with his recipes for ideas but then "tweaked them" and made them our own. I know it may sound a little hokey but believe it or not you really CAN feel full and stay satisfied on a plate of veggies, nuts & seeds! A fruit smoothie for breakfast will hold you over until lunch and frozen banana "icecream" with walnuts & blueberries IS as delish as the real deal. Trust me I LOVE my buffalo wings smothered in Blue cheese as much as the next overweight person so for me to say this is do-able.....it is do-able!

We feel better, more energy, less grogginess, sluggishness, etc. The less refined sugar you have the less you want it and the less you can tolerate of it. I cannot drink a regular dunkies with cream and sugar anymore because its too sweet. The more nutrition you get the less you crave food because your body is gettig what it needs!

I can go on and on but I will stop boring you now! Hopefully I have unspired some of you to try just simply adding more fruits & veggies. We as americans do not eat enough and know it but rarely do anything to change it. The fact that if I of all people can do it...anyone can do it. Yes I falter from time to time but when I do I usually regret it because I now know how eating pasta or drinking a soda makes me feel afterward and I dont want to feel bloated and crappy anymore!

Best wishes to the 2012 Portlies! I wish you all the best and hope over the next year I regret not being an "official' challenger myself!

P.S. we still enjoy our beer

Simplify.......

You can eat well, stay healthy, plus enjoy good food(and drink) without really giving up a lot. This book was the precursor to all the new fad diets. I read it over and over until I gained a thorough understanding of everything in it, particularly with regard to the carb and protein contents of everything I eat.

I was about 202 after my wedding and maintain around 185 now with no problem. I would highly recommend the book as its inspiring, interesting, and very easy to understand. Keep in mind it's not simply a diet, but a permanent lifestyle change. I'm in better shape all around now(still have #^&#^&#^&#^& for brains though) at 41 than I was at 21.

Nothing tastes as good as thin feels. If you're not full on the recommended amount of protein powder, just add extra - you'll still be under.
It's weird not eating with the family though. I cook just about everything and clean while they eat.
Food never really did it for me anyway. I never really enjoyed it that much. I just got fat because I was in the house with the fridge all day, until I found myself disgusting.

Smoked for 40 years at least. I quit last winter. One last pack and the patch. Smoke one in the am and put the patch on. The first week I think I smoked one more butt oneday but I knew I only had 20. I really want one still when I am fishing but other than that it does not bother me, in fact people smoking kind of do but I stifle myself.
I feel like the portly angler now. Need to get back on the treadmill, but this am I am going to walk a few miles in the woods instead.
I know all those BMI calculators are BS. For most of my life they said I was obese and I literally could'nt float.
I float like a cork now.

I wish this started in August. I was 203 when I got out of the hospital. I'm down to 179 now. I can't imagine losing much more would be too healthy. A before and after picture would be fun too.

I dropped about 25-30 this year, always worked out, hiked, ice hockey, just starting eating better. Pretty much maintained it as well.
