Interesting. They look like Salty kit plugs with a fancy paint & presentation box to me.

Me and the other one percenters need stuff to buy.

That being said, The guy is a SOL builder and He has plugs that I do not see Scott putting out. I think Orvis is making around $150

Couple things

  • They do look Boogerish but that layout is a very popular layout
  • Who is Larry Schmid? I don't recall seeing the name over the transom here but I may have heard of 1/10th of there guys out there doing this stuff.
  • They have three 5 star ratings on Orvis that looks somewhat spammish to my spidey senses. Each review posted over a three week period, have only made recommendations on that one product. So my Spidey Senses would say that is is possible, perhaps even likely, one/some was put up in an effort to validate the plug.

These may be the best custom lures out there - I honestly don't know one way or the other and have never used them.

Spoken like someone who has not seen Grapenuts' or ProfM's stuff.

In fairness to Mr Schmid, selling his work as art is a different market than selling them for fishing. Either way, the price shocks me.

Not where I was going at all. I see significantly exceptional builders out there - including these guys (and your stuff doesn't exactly suck ) - but my point was a 300x400 picture on the innernets means diddlly squat one way or the other as to what they are or are not.

What I probably should have said was: These may be the best custom lures out there - but I suspect not - I honestly don't know one way or the other and have never used them.

I saw that the other day while thumbing through the holiday gift catalog on the throne. I think I busted an o-ring when I saw the price.

Initial reaction was disbelief, but then I realized, what a brilliant business move. He's been selling on the other site for a while, and probably doing OK... But contacting Orvis (or any other high-end outdoor dealer) with a high-priced plug set is something that I haven't seen done before. Figure he's making a good chunk of change on it. Good for him.

Who cares if they work or not, I'm not buying it, but some people will. Imagine if BM did this? With one-offs? The sets would probably sell for twice that.

Now who is going to get into touch with LL Bean?

Attaching the Orvis name to them surely has something to do with the extremely high price.

He is a builder from LI, he sells in commercial bst forum on the other site. He advertises in the fisherman magazine.

I've never fished his stuff but a lot of guys seem to like em, his stuff usually sells quick on the bst.

Wonder how he partnered up with orvis?

He sold these boxed sets last year for around 150-175 direct. So looks like orvis is making 200.

For that money I'd buy a bunch of super strikes and bribe numbskull for another Danny.

Orvis... the most pretentious fishing website on the web.

I always wondered why they don't serve tea and crumpets to you as you walk into their retail store.

$80 of plugs in a $245 box?

There just appeared a new connotation to "Orvised Up"
It used to be just fly guys, next they will come out with a Orvis Montauk Surfcasting rod, then a knockoff VanStaal made in England, Special Orvis bag, the right wetsuit and drytop.

Oh wait, I think we have all that stuff, Orvis just wants to cash in on the next Yuppie trend.
If you guys fished in the daylight you'd see this going on I bet.

Fish have to swim by them first to even have a shot at being a fishy lure. I agree, looks boogerish, .....it does make me want to use some of the hundreds of dollars of feathers and deertail on my siwahses though.

Makes me feel slightly less foolish now, when I spend money with Gary Soldati. He needs to come up with a box since he discontinued the bags.

$325 would be a good price for a plug of the month club.

What a beautiful box!! $300 for the box would be fair So the plugs are just over $6 each.

He has the same product listed on his own website at the same price.... If you figure the plugs at his top price of 33 each, as listed on his site, that makes for a $193 box....
