Food Channel...no more how to , its all competition now

I think the food channel has gone down hill lately. All the cooking competitions interest me little. What happened to Good Eats and Emeril , etc where you learned something about cooking. I thought Good Eats was the best. Seldom on anymore. Chopped and Iron Chef are on 20 times a week.

Which to you prefer...Cooking competition or cooking how to? Obviously I prefer "how to".

I personally cant stand all the competion shows like chopped, top chef, etc etc. Its all BS and made for TV.

I like the how tos and travel shows best myself.

i really enjoy bourdains shows, hes a real deal chef, smokes, drinks and swears.

last night caught an episode were he gets shot my the blonde woman who use to host a travel show where she would eat cheap, was a pretty funny skit, she was complaining about how its all guys on the food network now.

Im sick of all the freaking baking shows too, who cares if you can make designer cupcakes or cake that looks like the host ugly sisters.

I hate the competition shows.....just don't get into them.

One of my favorites is actually Lidia's Italy on PBS...just really like the dishes she prepares...

They changed their programming several years ago to go after the home maker audience.

Most of the shows suck now, although you can learn a lot on Iron Chef if you pay attention.

There is a second cooking channel on my cable (Time Warner) called the Cooking Channel that is mostly cooking instructional shows which now has Good Eats in reruns. They have some other shows on food trucks (which seems to be the new thing) and some documentaries about the history of food.

I don't mind some of the competition ones, although I don't watch any TV regularly. Often times I see someone using an unusual combination of ingredients, a different technique or a unique presentation and I can incorporate that into my own cooking.

As a how-to, it's pretty much worthless, and I definitely miss the days of Good Eats. The best how-to I've seen that's on TV now is Chasing the Yum with Jet Tila. But the competition shows can still be useful and informative if you look past the "reality TV BS" aspect of it and just focus on the food they make and how you can apply it to your own meals.

I agree with CC tho- the baking ones are the worst!!

You could waych cupcake wars for a month and still not know how to make a basic cupcake.

Iron chef has great chefs but you only see 5 seconds of each dish they make. Dish has 10 ingredients and 8 steps to make it but you only see 1 ingredient and half a process.

Anyway , bring back Emeril and Alton. I do like 30 Minute Meals which is still on sometimes. I also miss Mario Batali. He did a good show and who doesn't like italian now and then.

I like watching the Hairy Bikers on the History Channel. Motorcycles and good food (except when they cook up road kill or something like that).

I don't know, but when they mix scooters, beer and whole roasted pigs, I'm in. One night they were making alligator fritters that also looked quite tasty.
These two guys ride their bikes all around the country to experience and cook local cuisine.

Thankfully there are still cooking shows on PBS, by REAL chefs and not "Celebrity chefs".

Besides "Good Eats", most of the shows weren't as much about teaching YOU how to cook as they were about showing you what THEY can cook when they have all the ingredients and utensils provided for them.

Good Eats showed you how to get by without all the expensive gadgets, and that made it more appealing to me!
